  1. I enjoyed this video - my father grew up in rural Jamaica, where they really do look at food and its medicinal properties. There are so many plants that when boiled can help your body, most of which the drug companies have now turned into pills and other things. Nature has already provided the answer for most things that harm human beings, so where ever possible, try and keep it natural...literally find the right plants....and just add water......You have a new subscriber.

  4. There are fake monks in other parts of Asia as well like Taiwan. I have seen these monks here get into their luxury cars after a day of begging. And you are right about the bars and certain izakayas in Japan. They don't tend of have itemized receipts, so they are free to change/modify prices, or charge you hidden costs without you knowing. Unfortunately, many foreigners fall for this since they can't read Japanese and are too drunk to care. I called out several izakayas like these who tried to ripoff my girlfriend and I when I lived there in Japan. They immediately refunded me the difference and apologize and went on to scam the next person.

  9. I visited Japan 6 times total in past 3 years. longest stay was 90 days lol and several one month-ish stays. Visited all 47 prefectures and all the spots I wanted to. Bucket list was filled and a lot more. all those island and whatnot too. I am visiting for one last time(in next few years at least) in a few weeks for just 10 days. Completely not sure where I want to go since I have seen it all in all different seasons. Probably just something light like Nagano countryside and a bit of Tokyo metro. I just love Nagano area so much.

  11. Modern Japanese homes are built now with better insulation and zonal or central inverter heat/cooling. He showed an older traditional home. Even traditional styled home built now have inverter heat/cooling whether central or zonal, but most are zonal.

  12. My husband is Japanese but lives in America. Every time he goes home he visits his grandparentsā€™ graves and prays at the family altar. Itā€™s such a beautiful tradition. In America, my family visits graves on certain holidays like Easter, Christmas, and anniversaries, but I havenā€™t done so in years. Going with him to do this in Japan made me realize how much I want to continue this tradition and to teach it to my son. Itā€™s such a beautiful way to honor their lives and the connection you once had with them.

  13. I was stationed in Okinawa at end of covid and was lucky enough to visit Tokyo, osaka Hokkaido and Saitama when their was no tourists was great experience to see without tourist lol

  14. Almost all of these are practically universal rules thoughā€¦.. donā€™t be late, donā€™t block the way, donā€™t be gross in bathrooms, etc. thatā€™s not really a Japanese only thing.

  16. The common winter food I grew up with in the Midwest USA was tomato soup. Usually with some small vegetables and grilled cheese sandwiches. It was something I always looked forward to as a kid coming in from school or on weekends from being outside most of the day.

  18. I visited Japan in the offseason and it was lovely but recently I visited to see the Cherry Blossoms bloom. I knew it would be crowded but I greatly underestimated the crowds and it made my vacation frustrating.. Many tourists blocking walkways and being very loud. I finally got some peace when I went to Hakone and Tenryū

  21. Another great video Nao! I think as a foreigner it's also important to research the culture before going to Japan as well. Certain concepts like "honne and tatamae" seem to me like important Japanese concepts that also explain a lot of the mindset of the Japanese. This video is really good, thank you for this video!

  29. Thank you for this insightful video! Most of these rules really speak to me and I wish they were as common where I'm from. For example, strong scents give me immediate headaches, so strong perfumes are an issue. Quiet public transport, respecting personal space and no need for interactions with strangers also sound amazing.

  32. For as long as I can remember, Iā€™ve been exposed to a ton of awesome media from Japanā€”movies, anime, lifestyle magazines from the ā€˜80s, and so much music. Over time, I built this image of Japan in my head, a mix of deep traditional history and a huge tech boom at a time when the rest of the world was still catching up. Two years ago, I finally got the chance to visit. I still felt some of that nostalgic vibe in the old countryside and retro landmarks that are still around, but I couldnā€™t help feeling that itā€™s slowly fading away, which is sad because it feels like thereā€™s never enough time to soak it all in. I love Japan and I really wish the government, or someone, would do more to preserve its traditions and landmarks. But at the same time, I think Japan will always hold onto its unique essence, no matter the era. I canā€™t wait to go back.

  35. Legitimate businesses will show prices upfront. No price, no deal! Don't follow touts offering cheap drinking opportunities. You will find actually cheap drinks in most bars and some people there won't mind chatting, be respectful and gauge the situation. To avoid being scammed, cash is king, leave your credit card in hotel. If it's not possible, use a low limit CC (if you don't have one, withdraw enough onto your bank so the limit remains low). You always have the option to snap the card in your hands too, don't forget that. Never, ever hand over you passport.

I love visiting Japan, but with the rise of tourism, the last couple of times my visits were met with a bit hostility, and many places arenā€™t accepting foreigners once again (probably due to some bad apples). I would encourage people to do their research on the areas you will be visiting, just so you arenā€™t met with a lot of ā€œno foreigner allowedā€ or the ā€œreservationsā€ turn away.

  39. Central heating in Germany is different. We have individual heaters which are sourced by a central heating system. So we can raise the temp of the whole apt. or house to a moderate low temp to keep rooms from freezinh while heating individual rooms which are used frequently to a more comfortable temp. I live in a very small house with no central heating but with individual heating systems to save energy. But the central heating with individual heating units that have individual thermostats is the rule in German houses. Which can be quite energy efficient as well. Could be earthquake preparedness a reason for not using a US style central heating? I know you should snuff out every flame in an earthquake warning. Which would not be possible in the old central heating US style.

  42. The train behavior is important. No matter where a visitor is from, act correctly on trains. Visitors too often don't understand how much Japan is not a casual destination or like where foreigners come from. If you want that there are other places. Japan is amazing but definitely about its culture. It fully operates on its culture. If you are interested in that and follow the norms its a very rewarding place to visit. Partner with its culture instead of having main character syndrome about yourself. It matters now because of over tourism.

  44. I think smaller towns should get together to create festivals and celebrations that take place every week and rotate per town. Make it viable for an area to have 4 or 5 towns close together and each week one has something going on. This will push tourists to those locations

  46. While many japanese don't travel abroad and are fed up with foreign tourists, the number of foreign tourists coming to japan is increasing every year. It is very interesting that the relationship is completely opposite to the past.

  47. I just came back from a trip to Japan and tried to always carry cash since everyone says that... Almost every place took cards. The only two places I can recall that didn't, were the machines for recharging IC cards, and a dive bar. The machine at the airport that I got the IC card from accepted credit/debit cards, but other recharge machines only accepted cash.

  50. In my research for my trip to Japan, I have seen Japanese people breaking a lot of these rules. It makes me wonder just how real some of the rules are. For example, if thee is no seat where you want to rest, people put down a plastic bag under where they sit and then sit down. No-one is going to walk to the nearest park to sit when there is a perfectly serviceable ledge or railing!
