You both are inspiring to us, gives us hope for future generations to come back full circle. My husband and I have been married 39yrs, he just turned 60 yrs. old and I'm just a few days away from 58yrs old. We've been living a very simple homestead type life for over 30 yrs. now and have been debt free for almost 20 yrs. we heat with wood, cook on a wood cook stove in cool weather and over open fire or using a propane burner when hot. We raise all our beef, husband hunts, we raise poultry for meat and eggs, have dairy goats and a jersey dairy cow for milk and cream. The only expenses we have our very low and monitored power and natural gas bills, our yearly property taxes, vehicle and home insurance. My husband does work away from home (mainly at this point for health insurance) but has winters off for the most part. I will add that having health insurance as we age can be important and we have 5 yrs. until Medicare will be available for my husband, that is if it is even around in 5 yrs. Many people are upset and dismayed by the economy and inflation, while we see it, especially with animal feed, it isn't a huge concern due to our financial freedom. Keep sharing, you both are awesome, and we pray other young people will wake up and stop being slaves to the world and its influences.

Great job guys! Not meaning to be critical in the least but more observations and tips.
For exterior wall corners, rather than using 3 studs nailed together you can use 2 studs fastened together in an L configuration which will save lumber and much more. This will provide a surface for fastening the intersecting walls together, this will provide a surface to attach the interior finish to (backing), this will make running wires around the corner much, much easier and this will provide a cavity to better insulate the corner. Partition wall ties (where an interior partition wall intersects with an exterior wall) can built ahead of time using 3 studs in a U configuration - just remember to insulate the exterior of the U before sheathing. Partition wall ties create a fastening surface for the intersecting walls to be tied together and provides backing for fastening the interior finish to.
House wrap provides more than water protection. As a semi-permeable membrane house wrap allows moist air inside the wall cavity to escape but prevents drafts and moisture from outside to penetrate inside. I'd use it ever time, worth the effort and expense, it's like buying insurance.
Whenever possible, I will frame a wall (or wall section as the case may be), flat on the floor (building the bearing walls first of course - and remember, roof bearing walls ALWAYS go over the beams), and I will attach the housewrap (and any door/ window waterproofing methods/kits),and exterior sheathing/ chalet siding sheathing while the wall is flat on the floor. This saves a lot of time and perhaps more importantly this ensures that when you stand the wall up it is perfectly square and stable, only requiring bracing the wall plumb from outside to inside, no temporary lateral bracing required.
I prefer to fasten the king studs to the headers (lintels) separately and then move them into position in the wall and fasten the king studs to the top and bottom wall plates. Fastening the king studs to the headers in place often can be very awkward and difficult due to close proximity to a neighbouring stud. Another way around this is to fasten all king studs and headers in place before placing and fastening any studs in the wall.
When building walls make sure all of the crowns of the lumber are facing the same direction - any studs with excessive crown can be "fixed" with a sawcut, some pressure and a nail. Walls that will have lower cabinets and counter top should have the stud crowns facing the inside of the building - this way you won't get any big gaps between the countertop and the wall.
Protip: Pay attention to sheathing products manufacturer spacing requirements printed on each sheet. OSB in particular needs to be spaced a certain amount to prevent future swelling and buckling.
Protip 2: Walls can be built in sections as need be. For example, if a wall will be too heavy for the crew to lift in place when built (and no cranes handy),build the wall in sections. The main thing to remember is to offset the top plate splice from the bottom plate splice.
When standing walls. Nail "kickers", scrap pieces of lumber to the outside of the rim joists about every 8' or at least on each end of the wall that will be stood up. Keep in mind the thickness of the wall exterior sheathing that extends down on to the rim joist - you will have to fir the kickers out an amount equal to the thickness of your wall sheathing, scraps of wall sheathing behind the kickers will accomplish this. This will prevent the wall from sliding off the floor when lifting the wall and setting it in place. An ounce of prevention.
Protip 3: A foam gasket under the bottom plate of exterior walls can help prevent drafts from any small voids and is required by code in some areas.
Protip 4: A router with a panel bit makes quick and accurate work of cutting window and door openings in the sheathing (always move the router clockwise), this can also be done while the wall is flat on the floor.
Protip 5: For chalet siding as used on this project, use 2" oval headed galvanized nails. The oval head countersinks the nail slightly and the galvanized coating prevents the nails from rusting and from streaks from appearing on the siding later.
I'm sure that you are planning to do this, but make sure to plumb and brace all the walls about every 8' on the inside before starting the rafters. Running a string line at the top of the outside of the wall and using this as a guide can help ensure that you have a perfectly straight top plate on top of which the roof will go on.
Be careful with heating up cans of canned food over heat, some cans have a toxic very thin layer (veneer) of plastic on the inside that can be transferred to the food when heated. You can "cook off" a can, wash it and use that as a cooking tool. Better safe than sorry!
Good luck and have fun!

I think a lot of people have the wrong impression about what living “off the grid” means. It’s just that, normal living, only disconnected from utilities, therefore it’s still regular living doing what’s necessary to replace reliance on the grid with self sufficient methods.
This is going to sound a bit weird, but I think a lot of people here in the comments are adding their own perception of the causation, as in the reason or intent behind the lifestyle, rather than understanding it is simply living the lifestyle necessary to be disconnected from the grid.
No, there are no rules. No, it doesn’t mean you’re amish, or religious, or a doomsday prepper, or any of the other possible reasons that other groups may live what seems to be in similar fashion.
Off grid living is living a lifestyle that fills the necessities normally satisfied by the grid in a self sufficient manner. That’s it. The rest is up to you. This is why he stated that this video is about WHY he does it. Because although it should be simple, people assume the motivations of other similar lifestyles onto him because he lives outside a city and does things for himself.
In short, drop the prejudices, people, and listen to what the man is saying.

Good video and good job guys. I've got some observations, tips and a few things worth mentioning.
If money wasn't an issue, you guys sure could have used an airless nailer on the job for quicker production and less physical strain from hand nailing.
I would definitely build up more stone under and on the outside of the cement pads, I see voids in the video which could lead to premature settling and wash out.
An option that you may have considered and discounted for your purposes would have been to build the floor even higher off the ground to create a larger crawlspace to work in as need be and for storage space.
When building a built up beam pay attention to the crown of each piece of lumber that you are using to build the beams. Install the crown side up and do not use boards that are excessively crowned. Joists also need to be installed crown side up of course.
Where you used pieces of pressure treated lumber on top of the concrete under the beams - a piece of asphalt shingle upside down in place of the pressure treated lumber will serve the same purpose - prevent the wicking of water - this is more cost effective and will last longer than the treated lumber pieces. Pieces of asphalt shingles also make good shims when small adjustments of height are needed for supporting a beam.
Cantilevering the floor joists by moving the outer beams inward, say a foot, wouldn't be a bad idea for a few reasons depending on the situation. The amount of maximum cantilever is determined by the depth of the joist material being used and local building codes.
*First of all this reduces the distance between the bearing points for the floor joists.
*Secondly this reduces the amount of exterior sheathing/ finish required (no need for sheathing/ exterior finish on the cantilevered beams).
*In addition, in cases where you are building a crawlspace in an area with freezing winter temperatures the cantilevered joists allow you build the crawlspace pony walls that skirt the building from the ground right up under the rim joists providing for better insulation where without cantilevered joists there would be solid wood (beam) that provides poor insulation.
*Cantilevering the joists means that the supporting pads are further inside the outside of the building which can help to reduce the chances of the supporting pads suffering from "wash out", the undermining of the pads caused by water dripping off the building (a building without an eaves trough will suffer from this much more quickly over time). Pads that suffer from wash out will tilt down towards the outside and cause the structure to sag.
I prefer to use (in this situation) 6" x 6" pressure treated lumber vertically (posts), cut to size to support the beams on top of the concrete pads. The beams should then be fastened to the posts and the posts are then fastened to the concrete pads using metal anchors. This does a couple things, this method ensures that an extreme wind cannot blow the structure over and using wood posts allows for easy adjustments as need be from settling/ frost heaving in the future. With all due respect sir, not fastening your floor system to your foundation is a bad idea - this will not prevent doors or windows from sticking in the event of settling/ heaving.
When building a floor like this I will run a stringline on the outside of one of the outer beams and using wooden stakes driven into the ground (about every 8' depending on the situation) and lumber scraps I fasten the beam to the stakes making the beam perfectly straight. For the little bit of time, effort and materials that this takes it is well worth it to save any hassle of trying to straighten the beams after the joists are on.
I will then mark out the beams at 16" centers (or whatever spacing the plan calls for), fasten all of the joists to the beams and finally fasten the rim joists - rim joists should be cut so that any joints are bearing in the center of the floor joist. Fasten the joists to the rim joists at this point. Now I would install joist cross bridging or solid blocking as needed.
I prefer to cut my floor joists to size and to not overlap them but that's just personal preference.
I couldn't tell from the video if your floor sheathing is tongue and groove, hopefully so as that is the best way to go for a strong floor. I also would have preferred to have seen the sheathing glued (and screwed ideally) to the joists for additional strength but I see why you didn't do that due to the insulation method used.
Great job guys, nice to see father and son working together in harmony.

Hey Kyle,
I've been watching for a while, and this is my first time commenting. I've been wanting to live full time in our family cottage located in northern Ontario, Canada, for about 30 years! I finally sold my home in the city, and winterized and renovated the cottage, and this is my first winter living out here. You should be proud of yourself, you've done a great job! I live here with my dog Hank, and he's the happiest he's ever been. Just like your dog, he loves the snow.
I'm 51, and was chopping and hauling wood most of the afternoon, awesome exercise, and tell your girlfriend that it will keep her warm! Lol (just teasing) 😉 To be honest, I'm a hurtin' unit tonight, need something a little stronger than wine. 😁
I enjoy your videos, keep 'em coming.
Take care,
Tiina 😊❤🇨🇦

Hi Kyle, thank you so much for taking the time to do video that showcase your life, no gimmicks, just pure simple snd straightforward. Your humility and humbleness shine through. This is your life, and its presented as is, and I, for one, can see it and would love to live they way you and Cierra do.
You took time to answer questions, and I thank you for that. People keep chasing and worshipping other people's dreams when the simple life, like the one you leave, could get many people out of debt. My prayer for you and Cierra is to get a Well so you can have your own water. Hanging some curtains would be nice to keep the heat in. I love your cabin, and slowly, you and Cierra have turned it into a beautiful home. The loft looks great, and frankly, the whole place looks nice and cosy.Once you get the front porch covered, you could have a lot of firewood and barbecue on the porch. You could even have a place for your shoes and boots. The front porch could even be screened in to keep the bugs away. Kyle, you're so talented. You can do just about anything.
I can watch you and listen to you talk all day. I always enjoy every video you put out. Sometimes I don't comment due to ill health, but trust me, I watch, and I enjoy with so much delight for e every effort you put into the hard work that comes with being YouTuber. So thank you, and may God bless you abundantly. I love ya'll for real ❤🙏

Snow always make any cabin look cozy, even cozier inside with woodstove blazing, fresh bread & smell of rabbit stew in the cast iron pot looking out lol, Great set up you have there young feller, i remember back in the mid 70s my dad & myself built a log cabin 8X12 i think, Well just an trappers camp, Here in Newfoundland we call them trappers (Tilts), past couple of months was thinking of building one for my g son maybe 10x16 with A frame roof, i have the lake picked out, great place we go ice fishing, i have hunted there few yrs back for ducks & geese, with dad, a place where nobody goes it"s about hr walk from the highway,, only think i regret is i never done this when i was younger, But i am sure my G son will enjoy it for yrs, seeing he is only 15yrs old, But love the outdoor life

Couple words of advice from an old guy, the ramp should have a chain, most do, to hook to the tailgate so it doesn’t fall out on the way up or down , good practice to use it, you can stand beside the quad , get it in reverse and let it roll down the ramp to the ground , no fear of it falling over on you , Safety First when you’re isolated like that , awesome video , keep them coming

Haha well you're in luck, I found the quote. I had to really dig for it and then convert image to text lol but I figured it could be of some value to you. Don't know who wrote it bit very interesting idea indeed.
-- Buildings must always be built on those parts of the land which are in the worst condition, not the best --
"This idea is indeed very simple. But it is the exact opposite of what usually happens; and it takes enormous will power to follow it through.
What usually happens when someone thinks of building on a piece of land? He looks for the best site where the grass is most beautiful, the trees most healthy, the slope of the land most even, the view most lovely, the soil most fertile and that is just where he decides to put his house. The same thing happens whether the piece of land is large or small. On a small lot in a town the building goes in the sunniest corner, wherever it is most pleasant. On a hundred acres in the country, the buildings go on the most pleasant hillside.
It is only human nature; and, for a person who lacks a total view of the ecology of the land, it seems the most obvious and sensible thing to do. If you are going to build a building, "... build it in the best possible place."
But think now of the three-quarters of the available land which are not quite so nice. Since people always build on the onequarter which is healthiest, the other three-quarters, already less healthy ccologically, become neglected. Gradually, they become less and less healthy. Who is ever going to do anything on that corner of the lot which is dark and dank, where the garbage accumulates, or that part of the land which is a stagnant swamp, or the dry, stony hillside, where no plants are growing!
Not only that. When we build on the best parts of the land, those beauties which are there already the crocuses that break through the lawn cach spring, the sunny pile of stones where lizards sun themselves, the favorite gravel path, which we love walking on it is always these things which get lost in the shuffle. When the construction starts on the parts of the land which are already healthy, innumerable beauties are wiped out with every act of building.
People always say to themselves, well, of course, we can always start another garden, build another trellis, put in another gravel path, put new crocuses in the new lawn, and the lizards will find some other pile of stones. But it just is not so. These simple things take years to grow it isn't all that casy to create them, just by wanting to. And every time we disturb one of these precious details, it may take twenty years, a lifetime even, before some comparable details grow again from our small daily acts.
If we always build on that part of the land which is most healthy, we can be virtually certain that a great deal of the land will always be less than healthy. If we want the land to be healthy all over-all of it-then we must do the opposite. We must treat every new act of building as an opportunity to mend some rent in the existing cloth; each act of building gives us the chance to make one of the ugliest and least healthy parts of the environment more healthy-- as for those parts which are already healthy and beautiful--they of course need no attention. And in fact, we must discipline ourselves most strictly to leave them alone, 50 that our energy actually goes to the places which need it. This is the principle of site repair. will always be less than healthy. If we want the land to be healthy all over all of it-then we must do the opposite. We must treat every new act of building as an opportunity to mend some rent in the existing cloth; cach act of building gives us the chance to make one of the ugliest and least healthy parts of the environment more healthy-as for those parts which are already healthy and beautiful--they of course need no attention. And in fact, we most discipline ourselves most strictly to leave them alone, 10 that our energy actually goes to the places which need it. This is the principle of site repair."

Regarding that wheeler, as I learned with the used Sportsman I picked up:
1. A plow is a god send
2. About $15 for a couple led pods for extra light is a must
3. Amazon, Anderson connector 2-4 gauge, for your battery. Quick disconnect, bring inside during winter. Take out, plug in and go. Save on battery wear
4. Build a little shed/shelter. Store the wheeler and some tools, protect from elements, helps starting in winter
5. Trailer trailer trailer. Watch Craigslist, similar, and can always find something. Ended up finding a 2000 Sportsman 335 and a 500 that I tinkered back to life. For $20 on each, added receiver hitches that can use pin and a 2" ball. Both can pull a little tilt metal trailer I found, a gorilla trailer, even a 6'x8' and the two wheeler trailers. Helpful on yard work, hauling etc. Smaller doesn't mean useless, especially when seeing hand pulling a sled all the time.
Lastly, a 12v accessory plug. If you don't have one on there, they're easy to wire up. Helpful for charging little things when out and about, etc.
Oh... Maybe liberty stick holder attachment 👍

A lot of mental, physical, and emotional health is in jeapordy because we're unhealthy. We're living in an unnatural world and trying to live my societal matters. Doing what you want (not illegally ofc for those who want to start that argument) is what's going to make you happy. Living simple, eating healthy, and surrounding yourself with people you enjoy will inevitably bring you happiness. Not a lot of people realize this, or they do but can't live that life just yet. Stress is a huge factor contributing to this unnatural phenomena of health issues, which are pretty recent btw. Stress from trying to find a job, keeping a job and working 40+ hours a week, coming home to either loneliness or an unhappy/dysfunctional family after said work, eating unhealthy food (causing a disruption in your gut microbiome, signalling to your brain, can contain toxins and other harmful substances to the body and brain) is also addictive. Going by media and politics and everything else. If only we could all just tear down these buildings and live off the grid like we used to...

Hey Kyle, like you said, seen many off grid videos, but after seeing yours and being retired since 2021, I'm going to do it, I purchased 9 Acres 5 years ago for 1000 an acre, and year later I purchased a 10ft portable saw mill and cut several oak trees down on the property, 60 trees to be exact, and milled all the lumber to build a 900 Sq ft cabin, that's been 2 years now, right in the pandemic, but I've had a hard time making the jump, one reason being my age at 60, but I'd have help , my boys are all for it, so I'm going g to do it, im going to put my place up for sale here in the city and start on my cabin, there is a drilled well on the property for water and I will get solar, don't need a lot, but thank you Kyle, after seeing your videos, I'm making the jump, thank you and be blessed

Something you should know ..
REMEMBER this Always --- K.I.S.S. or Keep it Simple - S T U P I D.
Be it those who write complaints or the ones Giving advice on ( D. I. Y. )
Its all the same.
The industry standard or ( Method of Operations ) looks like this.
( A-B-C-1-2-3 ) Known to many as: Who, What, When, Where, Why, How.
The building codes for various areas changes with the wind.
Off Grid, Commercial, Industrial , residential, and Hobby farm , just to name a few.
Across the States and internationally recognized Versions are a jig saw puzzle of He Said / She Said.
WHAT YOU NEED TO FOLLOW, UNDERSTAND, Relate to .
Goes According to your area and Skill Level alike.
SURE, More is most of the time BETTER then Less.
YET, Cost versus availability too changes what each will do in there own home. Instead of required by LAW.
ADVICE is like the ASS in everyone.
Say something ( BE DAMED )
DONT SAY Anything - Be Flushed away in a swirl of shit.
Forget that its an OPINION ( NOT FACT ) Shame on you .
Take it word for word and the TURD that hits the fan will scatter far and wide ( LEAVING everyone smelling of Crap long after the sun bakes it to high heaven.
YOU WANT THE TRUTH ??????
Here it is.
Every thing in Moderation.
When you invite a few billion plus into your living room ( EXPECT) the un-expected.
Be Prepared for rejection.
The Old Boy Scout motto holds true no matter what else comes your way .
BE PREPARED - A L W A Y S ! ! ! ...
The Worst is less likely to happen and hoping for the best more possibly to come true ( IF ) and when you do .
KEEP up the clips.
One last thing.
IN Math the odds are ( WITH YOU )
Meaning most who comment never would venture your way to do what it is you have done.
LIFE IS NOT ABOUT FAIRNESS.
Its a Crap Shoot - At Best.
More rights then wrongs - is a Favorable way of making it thru to the other side.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
Yet, being yourself in what you do -
that is the difference between ( US ) and U.

Hey Kyle, good to see you back. First: Galvanized roof is a good choice because, later on down the line you can paint it any color you choose to. Second: The cabin looks good the way it is but, you might want something that is more cheerful. If that cabin was mine, Where the dark part starts from the middle of the window up, I would paint it a medium brown. Walmart sells a color called Fresh Pumpernickel, really nice brown and the bottom part just a sealer. Do the brown front and back the same. Sides, the sealer. Then, in the front at the top, design a nice logo to show the cabin is yours and Sierra. Just a thought. Skeeter: is a good dog, I watch him and he is not afraid of power tools, he didn't even flinch when you used the circular saw. I love that stove. When you put the slider on, make sure you do it in a way you can adjust it. I have found in my 72 years, sliders tend to wear down whatever is holding it on and it becomes loose making your wood burn fast. I've talked to much. Take care

Hi Kyle, show some of your travels to the physical therapist. You guys should do a documentary of your life together. I know you explained briefly that you are high school sweethearts, but how and why did you go to Alaska, where was Sierra during this time, how did you communicate, did you work up there, how did you purchase the land you built the Alaska cabin on, do you still own it, how did you build that one, etc. Thanks, really enjoy watching your shows.

You seem to take your natural abilities for granted, like moving into a tiny mobile home, building the cabin you talk about making in this video. I already seen it and was glued to the video. You are not afraid of a bit of hard work. We don’t know anything about going out to cut firewood for the wood stove and what are all the details of what goes into it. You talk about venison & fishing. Would love to see how you go about that. Anyhow, you remind me of the very handsome lead actor, Jamie Fraser, on the Netflix Tv Series called, Outlander. All the woman have been swooning over this guy, because he's very manly. And you even have the dark haired lass. Keep up the great video’s, Jamie! Uhm, I mean, Kyle. LOL!
