Excellent program, DW! I lived in Berlin (stationed at Tempelhof) before, during, and after Die Wende. It was an amazing change that was long overdue. I took classes at The Freie Universität and learned a great deal about German history from both the professors and equally from my fellow students, especially the history of both post-WW2 Germanys, which sadly wasn’t available to college students in the East, who were restricted to rightthink by the SED and the UdSSR. By the end of the 80s, it was obvious to everyone that the East Germans, in large numbers, had become disillusioned with their ruling elite, who lived lives of extreme privilege in segregated communities (first in the Majakowskiring, then in Waldsiedlung) where they wanted for nothing, while the citizenry led lives of deprivation. This was not unlike the apparatchiks in the Soviet Union and their luxury lifestyles, while the proletariat and intelligentsia struggled to survive on what was on offer after standing in lines for hours.
I have to give DW credit for presenting history in a non-political way, letting each “side” speak their own stories and relying on the intelligence of the viewer to get it sorted. Thank you.

Thank you for this documentary. I was born on the Far east of Russia, then moved to Yamal, then to Saint-Petersburg. I saw many different people and heard many different stories. They are all in my heart. Of course, you could not show many people and cities, but thank you for these stories. They are not exotic (like smb is trying to say in the comments). I met girls like Veronika, guys like Kirill and women like Elena in my life. Maybe smb will be angry, that you did not show artists or IT developers, scientists or photographers, but these people that you show (although they seem to be "ordinary" and less interesting for somebody), they exist and they are kind, reliable and ...they are russians. :) Thank you!

A heart-wrenching and thought-provoking documentary if there ever was one. I was thinking it might be possible Leonora did the Islamic prayer chant on camera because she felt that while in the camp, there was an internal code or pressure and that a fellow IS prisoner might kill or harm her or her children if she expressed feelings of being disloyal to the cause or religion, or even just wanting to go home. If something like that is seen on TV widely, Leonora saying it was a mistake for her to join, an IS member of more power could order a hit on her or harm to come to her or her children. It is possible she's in a bind like that and still in survival mode.
Some commenters have said she used and deceived her father and is a sociopath and dangerous, and I understand why some people think that. It's certainly a possibility. However, it's also possible she has learned a survival mode, of trying to adapt to the situation she is in. And she has been in some extreme situations and that has made her unable to understand or sympathize with what her father went through.
When you think about it, how many teenagers, when they are putting their parents through horrific times with their drugs, flunking out of school, having no desire to get a job, anorexia, hanging out with criminals, or whatever, think of what it does to their parents? Still, joining IS is an unfathomable extreme for most everyone.
This would be a good documentary to show a Western teen who is showing an early interest in Islam and thinks they want to join the fight, that it will be romantic and exciting.

I challenge my convictions, am honest with myself, I try to objectively examine and understand the situations and things that make me feel awkward or uncertain, and what belies that strong emotional response. when we judge ourselves as vehemently as we judge others, we get an objective view of our self which helps us understand others. For me, being able to relate to how other people look at me, and how even the smallest interaction with other people can resonate in their lives and mine, a sense of social responsibility was planted in me and I try to make sure my interactions with people are neutral at the worst, and most often positive in whatever minor way, holding the door for someone, letting the person with 2 items go ahead of your shopping cart full in the check out lines, or even just a smile and nod that acknowledges their existence. Manners, civil behavior , kindness, all free, doesnt cost a penny.

Good documentary. Keep on this good work.
In fact is far better than just a documentary it's a mind blowing reflection on the current society . I think that greed and envy is one of the main reason why people will never be satisfied, why we are destroying this beautiful planet, and why the gap between rich and poor with all the inequality will go on to become worst and worst. Every body could live in an happy world without poor or rich, with the respect of life and nature, no religious or ethnic conflit, no more horrible war . PS: No I am not an hippie or utopian, and I have a very dystopian point of view on this world.
So most people prefer to destroy to be superior and have more at short term. And they don't want to educate themself like the financial world, because all they want is to capture all the work and richess produce in the world by the others.
But in the long run we will just destroy everything ( the soil, water, air, life... )and finally lost everything.
So at the end we will all be equal finally.

Psalm 24 KJV
1. The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
2 For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.
3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place?
4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.
5 He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
6 This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah.
7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
10 Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.
John 14:6
6. Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me

It is amazing and so appreciated what the drone images add to this well-done documentary film. Perspective; scene setting, of course. The Dragon's Teeth, for instance. Wow.
The drone offers a "gentle" viewing experience that a plane or helicopter cannot do as well. From the production company's perspective, cheaper to obtain while offering considerably longer footage from which to choose/edit.
The individuals interviewed provided the necessary you-are-there sensation. Well spoken, all. Sound level is good. No loud music intruding on the voices, sometimes soft, sentimental, reverent, meaningful in tone.
My one complaint is that we miss seeing so much of the priceless, compelling, vintage footage because the top and bottom of the frame are eliminated so as to make the standard, slightly rectangular 4x3 frame into the contemporary, wider screen 16x9 version. Please, show the source film as it was framed and shot by the cinematographer or camera person. We viewers are big enough, smart enough to understand that left-and-right black borders will therefore be necessary. Or, as an ideal option, allow the viewer to see it either way, in both fashions. The costs should be minimal.
Danke, DW Documentary.

This film could not have come at a better time as we are into the end of another year, and a good time to reflect on our past and look forward to the future. How can we live more meaningfully as an individual? What can we change about our lives to be a happier person? Money is neither good nor evil on its own, it is merely a tool, an instrument, a medium of exchange for services and goods. However, those with power somehow turned it into something much more than what it really is, inflating its real value to enslave the rest of the population by creating a world system which you work for it, and most people will never have enough of it no matter how hard they worked, because it is not distributed evenly. Some will have so much that they will never spend it all even if they could live for 275 years, and not even a fraction of this wealth will ever trinkle down to those with real needs, that's greed. But even for the educated middle class who have enough, they still cannot help but to buy into the myth that they don't have enough bc the supreme rich created a culture which they are told that they will still need more. This insatiable hunger for more is greed, and it is in the human heart and mind, and it is robbing people of their creativity, inner peace and happiness. If we are honest with ourselves,we are all guilty of it to a certain degree, instead of defending our greed, we should ask whether we are truly happy inside, and if money is really the solution to all our problems. Can we be happy with less, giving more, and caring more? How can we we break the cycle of greed? This is the real message behind this film.

We should enjoy the present without sacrificing our future...that to me equals banning 1st single use and 2nd plastic with additives 3rd finally full ban..only use biodegradable plastic. And not with the goal set in 10 years. Step one within a year, second within 2 and third within 3. Halt consumerism, fast fashion...food waste n ban planned obsolescence in tech/electronics....then aim for a circular economy. Buy 2nd hand, clothes, furniture/fittings, salvage yards often have doors, windows, wooden floors, resell or donate, min carpool or use public transport, or cycle, walk...possibly electric scooter. What's more important ....all future life or a cheap top, takeaway food in plastic lined cups/containers? We have to protest and vote with not purchasing. Also stop the sick conventional farming that kills soil, arthropods, amphibians n birds that help keep soils healthy, pollinate, provide free n natural pest control....and immediately stop factory farming systems. They are a breeding ground for new zoonotic diseases, use enormous amounts or valuable resources like water n the compacted dead soil leads to flooding or during heatwaves (bc they don't retain water n deplete groundwater) forest fires...and threatens ever more clear cutting of virgin rain forest to export nutrient deficient feed crops to our insane amounts of animals...who also suffer in this system; being units of production not sentient beings. Thanks DW for your excellent documentaries 👏

@DWDocumentary Hi DW! I just wanted to say that I appreciate the English dubbing on your documentaries, since I am blind, and reading subtitles on YouTube, when available, with a screen-reader is very unpractical... I know that many people write to you saying that they would like to hear the original speech of the people featured, even though they don't understand the language, just to get the original "vibe"... But it's very easy for them to unintentionally overlook that there might be certain people that would be disadvantaged by their preference!
And I totally understand them from a standpoint, since I am a romanian that learned English from Cartoon Network in the 90's... :) But it might not be the case here, because no one can learn Urdu from just a documentary about slums in Mumbai, or Thai from a documentary about rubber, etc... Besides, you make the effort to narrate your films in English, that is of a grater international circulation than German, the former being more relevant from a german tax payer's perspective, that being (I guess) your main source of funding.

Indian society is multicultural, multilingual, polytheistic, democratic, tackling with the (though officially forbidden) yet still functioning caste system, blessed with holy cows, dirt, smell, poverty and... enthusiasm folks... some of them extremely gifted... most medical doctors and IT engineers in UK and probably even in Silicon Valley originally came from India, I guess. Thank you for the instructive, witty and well-made documentary. Keep it up !

Hello DW, I would like to continue discovering our purpose of life on earth as a human civilization, Past, present and future!
First of all, I want to thank you for all your excellent material that you share with us through this channel, that gives us a clear vision of each of the corners of Planet Earth, always with the best criteria from a neutral journalistic point of view, with the due respect that each culture and its different traditions around the world deserve.
The quality of your collaborators as human beings is indisputable; His Reports around the world, transport us to know unimaginable places, often little accessible and high risk, showing us his courage, effort and dedication when doing his work, the incredible Information that he presents in his Reports, shows us the Crude side and difficult of Human life, they also show us that some people have more inequality than others, you cannot correct a problem without knowing it thoroughly and I feel that this is where your journalistic success lies, because with your work they show us that there is also hope in Life and in the future of Humanity if we unite and support each other, we can improve and correct many of the current errors that affect the entire world and its Ecosystem of which we are part, perhaps someday in the future "I hope" not too far away, we can achieve a (Ecological urbanist utopia) in which we can coexist with planet earth and improve our Present.
I congratulate you personally for all your work around the world, keep it up Team DW.
Greetings from Guatemala, heart of the Mayan World.

Incredible people and their inventions or masterpieces, cathedrals, castles and the masterpieces they have, cities/villages and their fascinating stories, little known-about places/countries/museums and what is found at such locations, the history of particular inventions and their development throughout the ages, different periods in history and at different locations, geniuses (be they artists/composers/architects/inventors). the human body/interesting/amazing facts, corruption/corrupt politicians and businesses, the difficulties faced by those fighting corruption/crime/revealing truths - including journalists, people who are making a positive difference in the world and how/why, architecture, geography, different industries, particular species/habitats, traditions, history, nobel-prize winners, the abortion industry, methods of abortion, what former-abortionists and abortion workers say about abortion.
your documentaries are amazing. Be they about logging or sea or the mona lisa or Berlin Wall - WHATEVER the subject, your journalists have a way of presenting information in a way that is interesting, captivating, concise, researched, precise AND entertaining. I return home from work quite/very tired and yet STILL i come to DW Documentaries to watch something - ANYTHING - to put something INTERESTING in my head. And there is LOADS to choose from! Topics are endless, we are spoilt for choice and quality of these documentaries is exceptional, unparalleled and astounding. There's always SO MANY interesting things to be learnt through your priceless work and efforts so WELL DONE - your work is AMAZING.

The documentary emphasizes "Russian propaganda", however the documentary itself can also be considered propaganda due to its total lack of objectivity and the way it omits events that happened and are happening.
1. The documentary exposes the story of a political activist on social networks and shows a phrase against the war in Ukraine on a street in Sn. Petersburg. However, the documentary and the girl are outraged that other citizens, Russians like her, are demonstrating against her using the same rights and the same modus operandi. Not all public or political activism has to be accepted, does the documentary conveniently forget that freedom is for everyone and not just those who oppose Putin?
2. The documentary exposes the dramatic and painful story of a Russian family man who (oh so sad!) regrets not being able to travel to all the countries he wants. I imagine that the majority of people who see this documentary will understand his ordeal, since most people on the world never leave their country of origin, not even for work. The ordeal experienced by that Russian patriot is truly 'painful'.
3. The documentary shows images of explosions in civilian areas of Ukraine, but omits that many of these bombings were caused by the deficient and obsolete Ukrainian defense system... which has been irresponsibly being used without proper maintenance and modernization, which has caused many of the Ukrainian shells themselves to end up destroying entire buildings of Ukrainian civilians. If not, just review the news of the Ukrainian missile that ended up exploding in Poland a few months ago.
4. The documentary presupposes and affirms (without showing any evidence or statistics) that Russian citizens are against the war because they do not publicly demonstrate against it. The doc reinforces this statement by panning Russians who simply walk on the streets of Sn. Petersburg.
5. The documentary claims that Russia is facing a severe recession. There is a lot of data that refutes this statement, the documentary does not show any evidence to prove this lie. Moreover, at the end the doc itself affirms that the sanctions have not affected Russia.
6. The documentary emphasizes and is outraged at the unique mobilization that took place in Russia, when in Ukraine, citizens are literally kidnapped to take them to the front, in gyms, malls, streets... not to mention the videos that show teenagers on the front. Any thoughts on it at least? none.
The documentary points out the term 'Russian propaganda', in that sense, as an informed viewer and with facts that support me, I can affirm that this documentary is also propaganda.

Hello from Canada...
this is particularly interesting because I have some aquaintences here whose language is Tamil. They are often in positions of serving the public, and it seems to fit well. they have the patience and "people skills" thise jobs so essentially need.
As I listen to the English spoken here, albeit from people whose native language dates back to about 5000 B.C., I hear more than the mere words, so said being often very different from Nothe American English which is so pragmatic. But when a culture has/has had, so little else, what else would naturally surface. I hear the big effort they have to manage English, and that also amplifies the deipction of the peoples' sentiments about whatever may be at hand.
But in a place with so few devellopped resources and a whole country's population, to help them would have to be to help them help themselves. This needs to have Sri Lankans here to interact as go-betweens between the technology and devdelopped societies of North Americanand the Sri Lankan society. Translations, especially precise explanatory translations will be essential, and communication by internet will be the biggest help in termis of getting the learning back and forth. Yes, BACK and forth, because anyone hwo does not live ther will need a lot of detailed information about the local conditions in order to know into what he/she might want to design innovations.
Having seen the video of the nrew railway in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, this, in comparison suggests that Sri Lanka is far behind what is in Tamil Nadu, but the two have no land connection either.
I am a retired electronic technician, age 72, and also have some added electrical qualifications. 955 of what I know was self-learned, and the way I learned and can retain it is a story in itself.
Next time I visit my favourite local Tamil restaurant, I will have to tell them about it all and see what information they can add, over a chicken butter plate!

The world economy will radically change, from the inversion of the law of markets: instead of the supply side driven economy to the demand side driven economy, through change of social culture, which will moderate the individual habit of consumption , in a new era of individual lifestyle, without greed , and without war that is in our animal-human nature. Simplicity is the key word, for that reason every one should try to make a voyage to an Oasis in Africa -Morocco, for example, and try to change lifestyle, toward minimalist kind of person that every modern individual should be in the new globalization era. Rising awareness about the kind of relations that connect human specie with the rest Nature. this interesting video is a first step toward the change needed in the culture, in parallel with the technology of electronic money like bitcoin...otherwise human societies will extinguish. thank you very much Deutsche Wale DW for your effort to produce such a very good documentary. thanks also to YouTube. This documentary, like most of those from DW was filmed so well, and the scenery is amazing! It's interesting, there's not much mentioned about the rampant overfishing going on in the North Pacific, as well as all of the world's oceans. The huge population on our planet has impacted food resources severely. By limiting, or even planning to eliminate petro-chemical fertilizers, many people will feel the financial impacts. Unfortunaly, this will be the poorest on on planet. Global populations can't be sustained without the current high-yields from crops. Look at what happened in Sri Lanka recently, with their elimination of chemical fertilizers a few years ago. The narrative carried by the main stream media concerning the demonstrations and rioting that went on there, was that it was mainly about political corruption, whereas it was mostly about the shortage of food crops, and the extremely high prices of related foods there. By being the first country to use natural and organic fertilers exclusively, their output dropped considerably. Of course Russia is competing for fish, overfishing has cut way down on what the oceans can supply. All countries that depend on fishing are in the same situation. Competition and aggression increases when resources dwindle. There is no way around this fact. My friend who left China in the mid-1980's when she was 22, talks about the aggression shown today by her native country. She follows what she says are the "real facts", and the news from reliable sources, not from the "legacy, main stream media" that we are exposed to. She talks about them intruding into the waters of many different countries with impunity. She has told me stories of her youth, and has shown me so many facts about their true plans. The "Belt and Road" program that slowly, and insidiously gained country in many countries - Europe, Africa, the Mid-east. The one to look at more closely is the CCP, not so much Russia. Many of her friends from there have said that many Americans have very little common sense, and that they need to "put their ears to the ground", look around, and get a grasp on reality, before it's too late. What country is the rising star in the world, and has become the biggest contender for control and influence in the future? Russia? Lol...

D.W. Danke schoen! This, THIS, is quality journalism. This is a profound and poetic story that gives credence to the quiet, small and very human experience that is rarely captured. Thank you for spot lighting that innate condition in all of us that is "survival". You have captured, at 63 and 23, the remarkable, unique human desire to connect, bond and build. I believe the take-away, the thread, that these two very unlikely humans share...is that they both live by a common survivalist mentality. "Against all odds, I will endure and I will survive." A harbinger of the past, passing the baton to a steward of the future. And more-so, they seem to have garnered mutual respect and admiration for one another. Anyway....I was moved and that is my uppity critique. : { )

Fast-forward 100 years.
The principles and tactics remain the same. For example, American culture is inundated with propaganda media. While, from very young ages school children are indoctrinated via curriculum, that, white people are genetically predisposed to be and are born racist.
Then as now we are dealing, less with the differences between peoples, and, more with the acquisition of power.
Race relations within U.S. culture itself are actually quite good.
As a means to an end, in the Rhineland and many other places throughout human history, a false narrative is being propagated to the masses.
The central question has been and remains:
Will sufficient numbers of people have access to and avail themselves of facts writ large, or, will they believe what is convenient to apathetic and lackadaisical minds?
Nevertheless, this YouTube peice is a wonderful addendum to a pivotal period. You are to be congratulated for a job well done.

Congrats and thank you for your beautiful work. Towards the end, I think that what that great jail officer idea managed to do is to make people love people through what nature, more precisely, God left us as tools. And if we must pass through these marvelous barrels of love, then be it, only at least to still be capable of learning to love and not judge. I was listening and watching to your documentary and at the end, very unexpectedly I burst into tears when seeing the sweet doggie with the police cap on his head...only someone who had such a pal at least for a part of their life would know that missing him or her will never go, as long as you live. I had my great caniche girl for 14 years 1/2, she passed away 5 years ago, but I grew up with her as a teenager becoming an adult. I cannot say years later how much I realized that she helped me stay healthy through so many things. So special...now whenever I step out of my place, doggies just pull their owners towards me, they clearly feel what's there :) I don't have the courage to take another one, but I think I should at least go to shelters to spend time. And, by saying this, to also learn to visit imprisoned people and children in shelters, because we need balance. That's it, that's the novel from my side. Thank you, Deutsche Welle, vielen Dank!
