  3. i recently graduated with an architecture degree, during all those years I've always tried to prove that classical design mixed with modern tecnology and techniques are the future of architecture. but everyone even the professors stayed stuck with this dreadful abstract and depressing buildings.   7. Guatemalan here, not only the success of Cayalá has been evident in itself, but other big developers are now starting to build other similar urban projects in different parts of the city. While at the beginning it was perceived purely as an "open mall", now people do, as the video says, use it as a city centre of sorts. While a portion of the population here still criticize it as a symbol of privilege and inequality because of the luxury real state and expensive businesses, you don't have to live there or have an office there, you can just go and hang around for a while, go watch a movie or just walk. The crime and bad state of the city took the opportunity for many people of actually using the city to go for a walk for example. Cayalá gives the people that opportunity again. Also, since I'm an architecture student, I have heard all kinds of critiques about the architectural style, saying it's a pastiche and it doesn't hold any architectural value. Personally, while I agree that it's a simplistic blending of many architectural styles that don't necessarily represent Guatemala, I do believe new classicism has the advantage of never going out of style, while more modern approaches will look outdated in 20-30 years. In the end, the only people that care are us architects 😂 regular people just look at it and think it's nice, and want to come back there.

  8. I've seen so many buildings in construction sites, where they first were made with concrete and THEN placed decorative stone outside. Since the 50's architects never thought about the longevity and beauty of buildings. It's time WE the public should take things in our hands, not the architects as they've proven.

  17. I was in Frankfurt recently, where some buildings have also been reconstructed in the style of what was there pre-WWII. A local said that some people referred to it as “Disneyfication”, making it nice for tourists. But nice is nice. Who doesn’t like a pleasant, attractive environment?

  18. I lived in Plessis-Robinson for 4 years. Coming from Paris, what surprised me most at first was the cleanliness and respect of the people who live there. The facilities are well thought out (car parking in the basement, efficient and punctual garbage collection, shops with long opening hours, armed local police, so you can come in late without worrying about security). I think the most important thing is to give residents the desire to preserve their homes, whether social or otherwise. It's well described in this video: empowerment is key.

  20. As an Architect myself, it's not the modernist designs that irks me. It's getting to that design mentality directly WITHOUT studying or even appreciating the classical designs. We should be masters of BOTH, it's never too late to study. Great video!

  21. I recently asked a friend if he liked his university experience. He informed me that his college years were depressing because of the brutalist architecture at his school. Essentially, he was implying that the ARCHITECTURE MADE HIM DEPRESSED! Our built environments have a huge impact on our wellbeing.

  25. It's amazing to me how mid-20th Century humanity collectively made all the wrong decisions possible. We traded sustainability, beauty, and urbanism that was once working wonders for everyone for greed, ugliness, and segregation. Even when the economic bubble is bursting and the planet is being rapidly destroyed for short-term profit, we still continue to destroy ourselves in name of greed and hatred for our fellow humans. It's sickening.

  26. Completely agree 100%! Most modern buildings have fantastic interiors with nicely appointed kitchens and bathrooms (for residential units) and other cool rooms. But most people don't get to see the inside of a building. All of us do get to see the outside of a building, and we residents of a city should have a voice in the design of such a building. We shouldn't say no to the construction of a building, but we should have a say on how it looks from the outside, because we have to walk by that thing every day.

Allowing people to purchase and therefore take ownership of the area seems pivotal. Not only do they have a developing asset, I imagine it increases their personal investment in the area. And attachment to it as you said. I live in Los Angeles and we are in need of some more human centered solutions to the housing crisis.

  35. Fantastic video - so encouraging to see. What Pemezec did by adding beautiful ornamental plants was also done all over Singapore to boost morale, under an extremely pragmatic prime minister. Not only did this help Singapore; it also inspired other Asian cities to do the same, even competitively. Even if beauty is a goal in its own right, it pays off!

  36. I always find it funny when people criticize communities like this as bad because they are too expensive. The reason they are too expensive is because everyone wants to live there and so those who can pay more will. The solution to this problem isn't to not build beautiful cities, it's to build more more beautiful cities so that prices will go down. Personally, I think it's worse to force lower income(and in many cases middle income) people to live in ugly, run down, disgusting places

As a German, where most cities are utterly ugly due to war and cheap rebuilding, I am always surprised to see how the Swedish and to a certain degree also the Swiss managed to destroy way too many beautiful buildings for no reason at all. Let's hope this "revolution" change things for the better.

  41. I am Dutch and have wondered all my life why we can't build like we used to do... Tourists never visit modern housing areas, but are always drawn to the traditional 'typically Dutch' buildings and towns. In the Noordoostpolder where I live inhabitants were asked some 15 years ago to come up with 'innovative' ideas as to what our area could look like in the future. As the Noordoostpolder is only 80 years old - it used to be sea - roads are straight, architecture is boring, but there is stll lots of space here, which is rare in the Netherlands. So I suggested traditional small towns with winding roads, small shops, even harbours ad perhaps traditional windmills, etcetera. I also considered a layout like a 16th century Dutch fortress or bastion. Needless to say, I never got a reaction. Praise to this beautiful nice project. I hope and pray many will follow. God bless!

India is very backward in terms of architecture. But I influenced some amount of people for this Grassroot Movement in India. LOVE FROM INDIA.

  45. Very refreshing to see these kind of projects being still made. Having studied at ETH Zurich, I never encountered during my 5 years of study any professor or lecturer talking about these kind of projects, or any classic style project in general. The point is that our universities are focusing only on modernist and post-modernist theories, where aesthetics are in oblivion. Old theories got lost, and architects now only talk about the political and technological side of architecture. Aesthetics and human psychology should be integrated into the debate, in order to promote humanscale architecture and improve the wellbeing of humans in the built environment.

  46. What people (and architects) seem to forget, is that the original skyscrapers in New York were completely different than the glass and concrete boxes they associate with all of them today. These buildings still had decorative elements and a very clear entrance. It is so ironic that people (and architects) are led to believe that building with roots in the past is pastiche and attempting to copy the past, but building the exact same glass and concrete monstrosities everywhere is somehow progressive.

As a German, a specific project in my country comes to mind that fits this just perfectly: The city of Stuttgart decided to put their big train station below ground, and so they are currently building a new underground train hall with huge, wide reinforced concrete structures. Just constructing this is taking 15 years, and guess what? The planned lifespan of this structure is... 80 years. What happens then? Nobody knows. Problems for future generations.

  50. I just graduated from college and it was this channel, right as it started, that introduced me to traditional architecture and urbanism. My last year of college, my architecture professors didn’t like my work because it wasn’t modern. My professors were always trying to get me to design modern things. I'm so excited to keep learning about traditional architecture and urbanism and practice it in my career.
