  2. the principle of order in diversity, symmetry, green spaces and high density is the key to ensure a beautiful city, also the urban layout is a plus. Dutch cities look so beautiful just for practising those principles

  3. This is exactly what the new monarch of Britain, King Charles III, has been saying for the past fifty years. He has even overseen the development of a new town, Poundbury in Dorset, just outside Dorchester, that uses design principles that were commonplace in England two, three or four hundred years ago before "modernism" in architecture arrived. Needless to say Poundbury has been a huge success, people are keen to live there and many property developers have been building their own "mini-Poundburys" throughout England over the past decade.

  6. I'm so glad this beautiful city was restored. Though it makes me feel sad about Manila, all of the beautiful architectures just gone after WWII and were replaced by blocky buildings that give no sense of culture. Didn't even know this was possible, Manila could've retained its beauty.

  7. Couldn't agree more with the point of distinguishing originality in architecture with necessity in architecture for public health. We live in a society where so kuch focus has been to allow artistic-genius freedom to architects with little reflection for the impact on public life. There is a huge need for reform in how oroginality of concept and design is encouraged, but instead to look towards byildinng standards as mentioned in this video. Always love your videos 💚💚

Classical/traditional architectural styles in the United States still exist in the many cities and towns of the East Coast north of Florida, and in the city of Chicago, but is increasingly uncommon everywhere else in the United States. And unlike all the boxy or cube-shaped urban-located buildings commonly associated with modern architecture, it’s usually office parks, strip malls, warehouses, grade schools which take much more space than they normally should, and cookie-cutter tract homes. Sometimes, you will see buildings that look traditionally-designed, but are designed in a way that heavily favors automobiles over pedestrians, which leads to a lot of places that genuinely feel artificial and unnatural despite having a traditionally-designed facade.

  10. I struggle to believe that reinforced concrete has a lifespan of just 50 years... so long as the reinforcing rods are kept away from moisture, or galvanized before use. Yes, exterior cantilevered balconies can have issues with "concrete cancer" but do the concrete columns and floors of curtain wall buildings really have issues? Having said that, I'm all for transitioning to low-carbon alternatives which could be Roman concrete. Regardless, natural stone and concrete are both heavy which means considerable energy to move it around. I am reminded of Buckminster Fuller's question to Normal Foster, "How much does your building weigh?"

  12. Great video. I already dislike the look of concrete buildings, but I had no idea they were so impractical as well. Love the visual presentation of your videos as well, and I'm glad to see you're comitting to your unique illustrated visual style. They're not just fun and stylised, but their simplicity also helps make the more complex explanations (such as how the rebars can get rusty) easier to comprehend.

  15. There's a highrise tower thats now one of the tallest buildings in my town and my jaw dropped the first time I saw it in the horizon when it was built, had to check if it was real with how weird and asymmetrical it was

  21. This video is honestly so refreshing. I keep seeing this very prevalent sentiment that if it's not Beaux-Art, then it's ugly. It's so nice to see architecture starting to be seen as a form of local cultural expression again, rather than just something that needs to be either extremely grand or "innovative" solely for the sake of being different. There's actually another example of a city prioritizing traditional beauty in the US. Newburyport, Massachusetts. Modernists were beginning to bulldoze their historic downtown into a car-centric mall until the residents rallied together to save it. They rebuilt their downtown for pedestrians and made restoring the unified colonial character of the neighborhood a priority. The Rural Urbanist made a great video about it, and there's even a documentary about it.

  22. My city built a new downtown area in an old traditional style few years ago. Before that we were nothing but glass towers and tiny and bland houses. I cannot express how happy I am that this style is not just being revived in my city, but all over the place.

  25. OMG! This is the piece of the puzzle I needed to make this happen in my city! For years I've been witness to so many architectural projects being totally bungled by "modern" architectural styles. All I could say to myself was what were they thinking?! I've come to the conclusion that our city council just hands every project over to architects as a "carte blanche" contract to do whatever strikes their fancy, resulting in the hodgepodge of repetitious amalgam of steel panels and glass, glass, glass that we see today, without any apparent thought of the pedestrians who are visually assaulted with these things for the rest of their lives. Little wonder there is such an increase in mental illness in the 21st century. Thank you so much for this information in a clear, concise package. I am contacting my council member today.

  29. I thought about this for years now. I live in Vienna and every time I stroll around the inner city I feel that subtle sense of peace and - I dare say - pride for what the ancestors of my people achieved 100+ years ago. On the other hand when I'm driving through our industrial/commercial districts I kinda get stressed. Not in the sense that I'm actively getting stressed by looking at these atrocities but more in a subconscious way. In my hometown right outside of Vienna a lot of new buildings were built in the last 10 years and they are all extremely bland and don't fit into the historic town center at all. Some people here started to complain already but due to higher cost nothing "traditional" is getting built here unfortunately. Talking with many people I found out that this is an issue for a lot more people than I originally thought. Maybe a change is coming soon, just as they changed their building style a few decades ago due to other reasons. I hope so at least.

  32. My boyfriend is a fan of the modern architecture - he's like oh yeah, skyscrapers, and im there in the corner appreciating wooden huts in a village and old churches... Let's just say getting a home together will be tough. Also what you mentioned, about sustainability being about the longevity of the building, is such an important and often overlooked aspect of it, and so is the knowledge of the material. I do hope change is on its way.

  37. Dubai looks like a fantastic sci-fi movie set... until people try to live in it. Few walkable streets, extreme heat, and endless traffic – it's a city built for cars, not people. When will they realize urban sprawl isn't the future? 🚗🌆 They seem to slowly get that they need to change something.

  45. very good and important video. this phenomena of modernism also effects many other aspects of todays life. its not only architecture. it also happened in paintings for example. modern art somehow gives the feeling that its goal is to look ugly or bad because its more important that it is special, than beeing beautiful. people are scared to use traditionoal methods because they think its bad to copy what others did before and try to go their own way. everyone tries to reinvent the wheel even do it was already discovered.

  50. As an architecture student, this is one of my greatest fears, that modernism will still stay around and continue to destroy the world. I would love nothing more than to study traditional architecture, but e-ve-ry SINGLE university I've looked into only teaches modernism.
