  33. Hey there! Great life choice. I had ortho surgery on my ankle. My surgeon treated me like any other patient he had “next” but I wasn’t aware. Was grateful for his talent and relief from my sports damage pain. I did everything he asked me to do, by the book. I always brought him fruit to my appointment, cuz he had a.m. surgeries with follow appointments in the afternoons…long day. On my bday I brought him a piece of cake and an orange! Anyway, my last appointment I gave time Kenny Gs greatest hits cd and a letter. Told him he was a dr with dirt on his feet in my terms, well grounded and personable. I hoped the cd would bring him joy and relaxation after all his hard days…as I would think of him daily, grateful when I got up and was able to walk easily to the bathroom pain free. He closed the exam room door, kicking his resident out and turned with tears and just hugged me. He said, “No, I didn’t save you…you saved me, gave me hope and courage to stay in my field as a teaching surgeon. Thank you.” I was in disbelief, wrote him off as just being kind. He replied, “When I met you, I labeled you as just another patient, not vested in your health. I saw your size and categorized you, lazy. Then you show up at each appointment doing EVERYTHING I asked of you active in your recovery. YOU have changed me, changed the way I am going to do recovery procedures. You healed me.” I laughed. Told him, “Get in line, all my life people have been labeling me. I’m used to it!” And hugged him. Surgeons are human. I understand why you walked away. Many of my acquaintances have left the field too. Remember, you can help people in many ways. But you have to take care of the care giver FIRST, to be able to care for others. Be well.
