Funny story. I met Tyson at a meet and greet after one of his shows. I stood in the long line thinking what am I going to say to him. Well, I thought about a video I seen on YouTube of one of his Q&As that he did at a lecture hall. He explained Isaac Newton's Orbit Cannon photo. It blew my mind and put the bug in me to learn more. Like a fool, because I only had about 5 seconds, I decided to share that with him. How he inspired me to learn. I walked up to him, shook his hand and smiled for a photo. I turned and blurted out something about I saw your video on YouTube, blah blah, Isaac Newton blah blah. Complete gibberish. He stared at me as if I was speaking Cantonese. Then i thought to myself (you fool, there are so many videos of him on YouTube. He has no idea what you're talking about.) So I said, I'm a big fan, it's nice to meet you. He said eeehh, nice to meet you too. 😂😂☹️ Love the channel by the way! At least i walked away with a photo.

I have been bingeing a bunch of Biographics videos and came across this one. It is 2:30am here, in mid-June, April was weeks ago and I never even considered this could be a joke! 😂 I've never read about the legend, I mostly grew up on The Sword in the Stone (and A Kid in King Arthur's Court LOL, and later Quest for Camelot, anybody remember that cheesy one? Before I got the best version by Monty Python 🤣) So, I didn't even consider it was a total myth, legend, complete bollocks. You have certainly succeeded in pranking me, and I thank you, this was really well done! Excellent, 10/10, would get pranked again.

I have not and will not thumb it down. But as a member of the disability rights movement I can see why other disability activists might have had a problem. Helen Keller did a lot of important things that were not about 'overcoming' being deafblind. Her public image was carefully stage-managed and there was a lot going on behind the scenes that seriously stifled her life in the surface of forcing her to conform to her image. She was an ardent socialist and those around her patronizingly assumed that it was a deficiency caused by her disability rather than a reasoned decision by a capable woman. She offered the world a lot more than an inspirational story.
If you're curious to know more, go to Ragged Edge (a disability rights website) and look up the articles "The Personal Helen Keller Returned To Us" and "A Woman of Her Time and Ours". That second is a review of Dorothy Hermann's book "Helen Keller: A Life" which you might be interested in reading.
You might also want to check out Stella Young's TED talk "I'm not your inspiration, thank you very much" and also just google supercrip and see where it lands you.
These portrayals are well-intentioned but do little justice to the three-dimensional humanity of disabled people in general and Helen Keller in particular. Or the reality of the constraints she was forced to live under, not as a natural consequence of being deafblind, but as a consequence of people wanting to tightly control her public image, which had drastic effects on her public and private lives. Hearing about all these things would've made for a much more interesting video.
Also many disabled people, particularly Deaf people, have mixed feelings at best about Alexander Graham Bell's work dealing with deaf people given that he didn't believe in sign language and supported eugenics towards disabled people including deaf people. He thought it was horrifying that deaf people socialized and signed with each other and even married and had kids. You can read more about this on PBS's article "Signing, Alexander Graham Bell and the NAD" or "Alexander Graham Bell and the Deaf community: A troubled history"
by Shandra Benito.
Mind you, you haven't portrayed her any different than the media usually portrays her, and you probably haven't been exposed to these viewpoints, so I thought I'd let you know with enough references to people's opinions that you can follow through on them if you find this stuff interesting. It might help with later portrayals of disabled people.

Would you consider doing vidoes on influential figures in psychology/psychotherapy? I'd love to see some videos on Jung, Lacan, Winnicott, Ellis, Rogers, Piaget, Perls, Seligman, Erikson, Vygotsky, Watson, Pavlov, Skinner, Wundt.... The list is endless.

Too bad for Arnold as they originally had planned that a 21 year citizenship was to be enough to run for president:
“One question on the qualifications of the president was among the last to be decided.
On the twenty-second of August the committee of detail, fixing the requisite age of the president at thirty-five, on their own motion and for the first time required that the president should be a citizen of the United States, and should have been an inhabitant of them for twenty-one years.
The idea then arose that no number of years could properly prepare a foreigner for the office of president; but as men of other lands had spilled their blood in the cause of the United States, and had assisted at every stage of the formation of their institutions, the committee of states who were charged with all unfinished business proposed, on the fourth of September, that 'no person except a natural-born citizen, or a citizen of the United States at the time of the adoption of this constitution, should be eligible to the office of president,' and for the foreign-born proposed a reduction of the requisite years of residence to fourteen.
On the seventh of September, the modification, with the restriction as to the age of the president, was unanimously adopted.”
- Historian George Bancroft in his:
‘History of the Formation of the Constitution of the United States’ (1884) (Volume 1 Page 346):

Honestly I can't get enough of Biographics. Yet, there's something I couldn't help but noticing.
You've done Hitler, Stalin, Leopold, Mao... But none of the Armenian Genocide perpetrators just yet.
As someone of Armenian descent whose 8 great grandparents saw their families and villages burnt to ashes, I feel like a story like that needs to be told. Our deaths and lives are as worthy as the others', and when they're ignored, they're undervalued. I'm not offended yet because I know Biographics is relatively new. But it's about time you get to this particular topic.
Anyhow, I really hope my message gets the visibility it deserves, and why not, sooner rather than later, the video commemorating such tragedy.
Thanks in advance, you still rock.

Been watching your videos and reallly enjoying them and i would like to make a suggetion for a historical character in a future video.
The person is Julie d'Aubigny, who was a 17 century singer and dualist under the bourbon king Louis the 14 of France. She were openly bisexuel, and were actually able to exist and kinda thrive, in a not exactly tolerant society, because of a complicated relation between the King and the Church. She also had some crazy adventures like rescuing a noble girl from a monastary, by liting it on fire and making a replacemnet for her body, so everyone thought the girl were dead. The reason why i would like a video about her is because i find the very early stages of the enligment, and some of the first more liberal ideas of equality very interesting. I know she weren't a particularly political active person, and didn't
do her actions and live her life style because of a agenda of equality, but more because she wanted to, but exactly that, doing things because you feel passionate about them despite being controversiel catches the idea of the freedom and liberty even better than doing things because they are controversiel. I also like her story, but have found it hard to find reliable information, because her story is pretty crazy and some sources seem to differ about what was real, and was more legend and exageration. She was also a bad ass person, and just all around and awesome part of history.
Again thanks for the amazing content, and hope you keep it up, and maybe try my idea. (if so you could also wait for the realese till it is pride month since it would go along with the topic)
Sorry for my bad english if it is there, english is not my first language.

@Biographics I am a firm believer that the lessons of the second world war are in jeopardy of being lost on the newer generations (So I applaud you on these videos, as it is important to understand that these were people, not inhuman monsters who committed these atrocities). Younger generations don't seem to want to hear about it, or when they do hear about it, it's some bastardized version of what really happened, usually to promote someone else's political agenda (I think of the statement that "One of the first things Hitler did when he came to power was take guns away from citizens" being used to defend the second amendment in the US, as this is both false and misleading, as German citizens were not armed to begin with under the Weimar Republic) but can be applied to anything Reductio ad Hitlerum. I can't help but think of the quote "Those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it". I have, since high school, been fascinated by the second world war, every single aspect of it. I first read the big 4 books on the Nazis... Rise and Fall of The Third Reich by Wilhelm Shirer, Hitler by Joachim Fest, Inside the Third Reich by Albert Speer and Mein Kampf. I then devoured biographies of any major participants in the war. From Churchill and Roosevelt to Hitler and Hirohito to Eisenhower, Patton, Montgomery and Rommel to Goering and Himmler, Rudolf Hoess, Rudolf Hess to Anne Frank and Oskar Schindler to learning about the holocaust and those involved in it, both perpetrators and victims. I learned of the ease in which Goebbels manipulated information to keep the masses in check, which is a tactic still extensively used today. My neighbor when I was a kid was a WWII US Navy veteran, and served in the Pacific. I learned of the island warfare that to that point in history had never really been effective in holding territory. I learned of gas rations and rubber drives and war bonds and minting pennies first out of steel but then out of spent shell casings and nickels being made out of silver because those metals were needed for the war effort. I remember a story my father told me of when he was a kid and they were driving at night and my grandfather had to keep the headlights off because U-Boats had been spotted off the coast of Massachusetts. Point is that the sacrifices that were made are being forgotten and the atrocities that were perpetrated are being exploited as a result of willful ignorance. Rant over

Ahhh, the saddest and most accurate insight you have voiced about
Robin....To his Narcissistic Mother ( who socialised & was very absent from her only child) & a Father who shunned & had very little connection or time for his Son, he yearned for acceptance and unconditional love all his life.
His love for his Mother was gained, only by finding a way to cut through her depression by making her laugh.
His 'nanny' , a paid member of his upbringing, was the only person, who showed him unconditional love, whilst a child.
He gave all he could to live his Life, as a giver of kindness & artists & the funny observer, who recognised both the light & darkness of being.
I mourn his early death.
He had a steely strength, & was a grateful humble Man, who gave his insight
& sense of the obsurdity of life as a gift.
I mourn his early death.,...yet understand, he felt the need to go out....on his terms.

An Navigator uncle of mine, Jim', was an RCAF 'Poster Boy' for a short time in late 1943 early 1944 when he was in training. The newsman covering him at the time was Hemingway. Hemingway eventually followed uncle Jim to England where he met Jim together with his crew.
As a stunt, Hemingway was a 'passenger' on the crew's 1st combat bombing mission with 98 Sqdn RAF. Approaching the target their B-25 'Mitchell' bomber was hit & damaged by 'Ack-Ack'. When the flak then concentrated on the wounded aircraft, a 'scene' developed involving Hemingway. My uncle had a wonderful sense of humour and a very funny way of describing the incident when he'd re-tell his 'Hemingway story'. It involved one of the crew having to knock Hemingway out and then tie him up to keep him under control. Before my uncle died, I made of point of getting the 'real story' from him - just for the record. In essence he said, the story was the same . . . Hemingway did panic but in fact, after being given a ‘stern’ talking to by the captain of the bomber, he did settle down.
A 1944 newspaper clipping in Jim's scrapbook entitled 'I WENT BOMBING A P-PLANE WOOD' by MICHAEL MOYNIHAN News Chronicle Special Correspondent (also flying the same mission) describes the incident . . . "In one of the six Mitchells, I later learned, another passenger-observer was flying — Ernest Hemmingway**, author of "For Whom the Bell Tolls." His plane was twice hit. But for a Spanish Civil War Veteran, the experience cannot have been alarming."

Thanks for the excellent romp. :) As you say at the end, there's no singular "Arthur", it's an amalgam of all sorts of sources and tales, taken up by many nations as their own at different times. There was an Irish Celtic king called Uthair who may have been an inspiration, but no direct proof. One could cite other kings in England and Scotland aswell, or even some around Europe. More importantly, like you said, all of the key modern popular aspects of the tale were invented by Mallory in France and others; Mallory thought the existing old tale a bit boring, and it worked, his version was much more popular, Boorman's movie "Excalibur" being largely based on Mallory's work. By hokey did it all get Chinese whispered. :D
A guy I knew back in the late 1980s was obsessed with Arthurian myth, he travelled extensively around Europe looking for hard evidence (he even had a real sword made for him by a guy in Spain, at great expense), but in the end, being a more hard evidence driven individual, he found... nothing.
Arthur as a tale has become more an idea than a reference to a specific individual from history, about honour, loyalty, love, betrayal, sacrifice, etc. It's why I like Boorman's movie so much (Williamson's Merlin is the best I say!), it has a certain punch that's missing from modern film.
It's just embarassing though these days to visit places like Tintagel in Cornwall, and Glastonbury, where they tell tourists all this stuff as if it's real, because it's what the tourists want to hear (these places take the phrase "tourist trap" to whole new levels). Then there are those who follow it with horrendous selection bias. They decide a particular place is relevant or theory correct and then go looking for selective items to back it up (which is a nonsense way of supporting anything). Hence the existence of sites like this:
http://www.thisisnorthcornwall.co.uk/king_arthur.html
Even funnier is the fact that so much of the Arthurian myth is rooted in Christianity, yet it's been coopted and absorbed by a heck of a lot of pagans & suchlike. Glastonbury inparticular is absolutely awash with people into crystal healing, wicca, you name it. It's become the UK's hippy central. :D
2:35 - Given how many people still believe in complete b.s., I guess that shoes how awful the giant government programme known as state education really is, hehe. ;)
The Arthur myth reminds me of Tolien's books, ie. something he created because he felt Britain lacked a deeper historical mythos. Funny actually, despite some silly bits I do rather like 2004's "King Arthur" with Clive Owen (one just has to ignore Knightley's ridiculous armour. :D); the Roman connection idea and general style are more believable than the modernist cringefest that was Ritchie's 2017 effort.

I was totally confused. I have been an amateur Arthurian historian since I first saw the movie "Camelot." Since that time, I have read books both fictional (Such as the Crystal Cave series, The Once and Future King, and Mort D'Arthur) and historical.studies as to the possible origin of the legends. I even have used them (minus the incest and adultery) as a guide to life, and look back now and see my life in terms of the stories. (Growing up, was my "Lancelot" phase as a teen and young adult, trying to live by the code of Chivalry. I then passed into my "Arthur" stage as a young man, wiser, accepting more responsibility and judged things with a level head, and now, in middle age, I have reached the "Merlin" stage. I have seen many things, an, hopefully, gained some wisdom to pass to those younger than myself
Many of your "facts" just didn't line up, completely at odds with what I knew. I kept wondering where you got this stuff. When you revealed it was an April Fool's prank, I don't know if I was more relieved or upset. I thought that forty years of studying all the material I could about Arthur that something new must have been found that totally contradicted every thing I had ever learned about the fictional, and historical, Arthur.
You certainly wove an interesting tale. Well played, sir, well played.

Simon,
I am grateful for your vlogs.
Francis Sinatra was a genius of interpretation & vocalisation of music and his voice expressed & embodied, the human condition & challenge of being .
His Mother was shamed in her community, for helping, any woman ( at that time) for being a lay Midwife, & all that was shunned & hiddend in her life time.
Frank's ( amazing, phrase of Voice has never been heard yet in this age, & perhaps never will be again) legasy, I truly hope, will not be forgotten by history.
I believe we are all beautiful beings, some are fortunate enough to have caregivers, who teach us, just that.
It is enough just to exist and walk this Earth.

I credit Stephen King with turning me on to adult literature. When I was 14, I discovered Stephen King when taking a class in school where students took turns reading aloud short stories. Someone brought a copy of Night Shift, which is King’s first short stories collection and many students were instantly hooked. I especially remember from that book the short stories I Am The Doorway, Children of The Corn, Graveyard Shift, The Boogeyman, and The Mangler. During that class, I also bought and read a paperback copy of Night Shift, followed by Firestarter, The Stand, The Shining, ‘Salem’s Lot, The Dead Zone and Cujo. I haven’t read a lot of Stephen King since I was in my early 20s, but his written work got me interested in reading other authors.

I don't know that Tony Stark is based on Elon Musk, because I think IronMan appeared in comic form, with that story line, at least a decade before Elon was born. Having said that, he is about as close to Tony Stark as anybody in the real world can get. I am an old bloke now, but I find it hard to think of any other person in whole world, I envy or admire more. If I could 'be' somebody else, I'd love to be Elon Musk.
Going back to that idea, if Howard Hughes, the Aviator, had a son very late in life, and that son grew into Elon Musk... You'd pretty much have IronMan. He'd inherit Hughes helicopters and aircraft, a defence conglomerate, and be a manufacturer of advanced weapon systems for the us gov & mil. He'd simply be stepping into the family business. It's IronMan, letter perfect!

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. I LISTEN TO YOU OFTEN. I APPRECIATE ALL THE TIME YOU HAVE SPENT GATHERING THE INFORMATION IN YOUR VIDEOS.
You are entertaining and the research you put together keeps me listening to you.
I know a lot about many of the subjects and people you choose but what is so impressive to me is that I can almost guarantee you will share things about someone or something I hadn’t ever heard about I think your channel is fantastic and I think you are an entertaining narrator. I never get bored listening to you nor do I start to think of other things because, like so many, you NEVER SOUND MONOTONOUS OR DULL.
Thank you for your time and energy you put into your videos.
It is impressive how you are able to put together just the right pieces of information to tell an entire story. You do this quite well.
There is one last thing I would like to say to the people who comment...
This is something I am going to add to all my replies from now on.
It gets so sad when I see people work so hard putting entertaining videos together just to be knocked down and most of the time, for NO REASON, people just want to be nasty because their lives are not going well so they have to try and bring others down too.
It would be very interesting to those who critique people’s videos negatively create their own channel.
I know from my own experiences in the entertainment business how difficult and draining filming of any sort can be.
I don’t think negative people understand what is involved in creating a channel and branding the channel.
People need to understand a person creating a channel has to find the right subject and research, something to catch a whole lot of people’s attention and interest to keep people keep coming back.
The information has to be read and broke down which could mean thousands of documents and pages need to be reviewed.
Once all the research has been read a decision needs to be made of what information to share.
This decision not only must be entertaining but, only a very small amount of those possible thousands of pages of information can be used while still being able to give viewers the entire story.
Also, the right pictures need to be found or illustrated by hand which must resemble every episode, a style people recognize.
Filming which more often that not, follows overuse of vocal cords due to take after take, many times, over in order to keep continuity and remain the same with every episode.
Finally, cutting and editing while as I said keeping an original motif, keeping a similar appearance, form, characteristic.
A channel needs to have just the right look and sound that scream “unique, enthralling,” creativity which will engross and captivate a viewer and a channel that does not have an appearance of another, not like anything or anyone else.
This in of itself can be fatiguing, especially always maintaining a format people recognize as a particular individual and channel.
So people, before you have something negative or just want to be a SMARTY PANTS, why don’t you create your own channel and do it so well that you have thousands or millions “following” and “liking” you, then come back and write your rude comments. I guarantee you won’t.
The world needs to stick together and help each other out.
Support people, there is good and bad in everything. It is just as easy to point out the positives and if you are pointing out errors to help a person or giving constructive criticism try doing it in a tactful manner.
Try changing your thought process, look for all the good points in people’s channels, write those comments and ignore the things you don’t like or just don’t watch that certain channel.
Your lives will drastically change for the best by thinking this way, for this I can honestly tell you because I have seen it many times.
TRY SEEING ALL OF THE POSITIVES IN EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING AND WATCH YOUR LIFE CHANGE FOR THE BEST.
Take care everyone and have beautiful days.
I hope everyone can take this thought and just try it for 1 month, only say and write positive words so that is all your brain sees and hears. It is a fact that your brain will physically change for the best too!!!
You will be very surprised and so will everyone around you. Things will start going your way.
P.S.
Forgive me for any errors for I am so tired I could barely keep my eyes open and cannot write or edit another word.

I love the music chosen for this video. I also think that Queen Elizabeth can serve as an example to other world leaders.
@20:20 I have had the privilege of having a number of animals in my care. StarFire and SkySong were two of my favorite cats. Slither was a pet garter snake I had, Minuet was a Brazilian Mouse Possum. I had a Virginia Opossum as an occasional guest in my home (not a pet), Ratatouille (a baby rat) was brought to me by my cat StarFire, and I had a mud-skipper as a pet fish for a time. As an aside, I don't recommend getting a mud-skipper as a pet. Although they are very engaging animals, they can-not be breed in captivity, and I don't want the wild population depleted. I did not know that at the time, or I would not have gotten one. Other animals I grew up with, and considered pets were a Chicken (Henrietta) a Chinchilla (Mulechand), several turkeys (unnamed) Several dogs, my favorite was one named Snoopy which our cats would mob constantly because they liked him. I've also had several betta's (Siamese fighting fish) whom I named after letters of the Greek alphabet, so those would be Alpha Betta, Betta Betta, Delta Betta and Gamma Betta. Alpha Betta used to come up to me and lay in my hand as I stood at the aquarium admiring the fish in it. Hope you enjoyed this post, and treat any animal you come in contact with, with love and respect.

The comments found below in the comments section, are depressingly immature, or inconsequential, and concentrate little on the subject. Sorry everyone Martin Scorsese was unavailable to direct this YouTube video.🤓
I am interested your sources and in where you fact check certain historical “inaccuracies”. Mudgett or “Holmes”, as far asI have been able to research, only admitted to 27 murders after being offered financial aid by local reporters and media, he may have committed many more that he wasn’t paid to give information about. Mudgett was a con-artist and a sociopath who did everything for gain, he sold freshly buried corpses for gain, he built his “castle” to lease to business owners for profit, he had several tenants paying monthly rent, he built the building with secret passageways to utilize the building as a “body factory “ for colleges. Everything was done to profit including confession to murder. His initial murders were first a financial scheme selling victims bodies to medical schools for dissection. He saw all human beings, not as people but as tools or products. He had no empathy or moral conscience and is likely to have killed many more victims than it has ever even been speculated upon. The drug store owner who is stated to have lived a long life seems like a reverse tall tale meant to downplay or discredit earlier reports that were also never fact checked and reported as gospel. I don’t mean to say that I have evidence to the contrary but it seems just as much speculation as it is to say H.H. Holmes killed them. He told parishioners they moved westward and that may or may not have been true. However I can find no evidence that they lived long happy lives.
Your channel is very interesting and hopefully gets people involved and interested in reading and finding out the truth about history. Nice feed!✌️

Firstly I’d like to say thank you very much to you and your team, My daughter and I (Mostly me) have really enjoyed the bio’s , If you ever end up in Cambridge England while we’re here, I’m going to take you to a pub quiz night…. You’ll clean up, no one stands a chance with you in our team!!!
If I was to have ANY suggestions on content it would be along these lines: Judo Kano, Stan Lee (R.i.p.),
A run down of Characters and bio’s of the authors from great classics like – “The count of Monte Cristo “(my personal favorite) , “Don Quixote” , “Great expectations” etc.
Some of the great inspirational people mentioned in for instants Ryan Holidays books as well as others.
My daughter LOVES the “Good night stories for rebel girls” books, which tell a brief story of some of the ladies you’ve already mentioned, as well as countless others. She would love to see lots more on here she said.
Kind regards and Deo Volente.
Shaun.

Hey Simon I really enjoy all of your videos but I just want to see a video on someone from everywhere. A little more diversity please. All of your bios thus far despite being intriguing, educational and interesting have been about Europeans or European immigrants. And I was just hoping for an equal amount of bios of people from everywhere. There's a lot of focus in general on Europe and Europeans, but a lot of Famous and underrated people from elsewhere who get less recognition for being non white. I want to see something on a Native American who's famous modernly, on a Pacific Islander other than a rugby player or the Rock, on an African who's not a dictator or an Athlete, but a hero to people like Thomas Sankara, or Kwame Nkruma or on a famous Latino who changed Latin America substantially other than Simon Bolívar. I want to learn about a famous Japanese person, Korean, Southeast Asian, South Asian, Middle Easterner, North African, but most of all about a famous central Asian from Kryghzstan, Tajikistan, or any of the other five great stans because famous people from there are consistantly overlooked and forgotten. Also about a famous Mongolian other than the Khans, because after Genghis Khan and Kublai no one ever talks about Mongolia again.

Simon, first of your “Biographics” I’ve seen. I can say, with firm conviction, it absolutely meets, in fact, EXCEEDS all expectations I have from “Today I Learned” and “TopTenz”! I am conflicted on your backdrop. It give a slightly scholarly look adds some weight to what you say, but anyone familiar with your work already knows you to be a straightforward speaker of the Truth. If you are going to stay with it. Might I suggest some books, possibly a bookshelf, maybe 3 empty white, 3-4”, binders. Each with an insert into their spine a piece of paper labeling them Unity hard copy Wikipedia or each one with, “The Collected Truths Of....”, with subjects ranging from the Illuminati, Free Masons, Area 51, DARPA 1958-, you know, not quite inflammatory, but for those mentioned, unsettling. Perhaps posters with famous people and quotes they have made. Mister Rogers, “Love begins with Listening”, Albert Einstein, “Try not to be a man of success, rather try to become a man of value.” Or “The true sign of intelligence is NOT knowledge bot imagination.” Or, and the one goes out to 45, “Whoever is careless with the Truth in small matters CANNOT be trusted with important matters.” Or “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceed our humanity.” Last Al, “Great Spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.” Do you have a P.O. Box?!!? Oliver Cromwell, “He who stops being better stops being good.”

... there's another great story. Where did Linux come from?
By the mid 1980s, UNIX was everywhere. But UNIX was an operating system for big computers. It would not run on a 286. Many people wanted a home-user version of UNIX, and the Hurd, (the Free Software Foundation) formed to create their own version of UNIX, which would run on a small pc. They started with the tool chain, and the compiler. Those they re-created brilliantly. Then they started on the kernel, and bogged down in being too ambitious. What they wanted was simply too complex and difficult. In 1991, in Finland, a 19 year old computer science student called Linus Torvolds got an exercise from college, to write 2 small programs, and then have them alternate between them, a time share arrangement. At the time, DOS and Windows would hand over complete control of the whole computer to what-ever program was running at the time. What Linus wrote, took that control away from the 2 programs and gave it to a 3rd, which then alternated between the other two. After looking at this for a couple of hours, Linus realised that is the heart & soul of an operating system... So he started to write his own, inspired by a UNIX version he had at college - Minix. After a couple of days working on it, he posted what he had on a message board, online, and asked if anybody would like to help & contribute... People did.
What happened next, was some of the people who had started to help Linus, took the early versions of his kernel, and the tool chain of the Hurd, and put the two together. What that created, was a complete (brand new, somewhat bug infested) operating system.
Linus didn't create it, and the Hurd didn't create it, it was a combination of the two. And strictly speaking, none of them created it, because in 1969 Richie and Kernigan created UNIX, and got Brian Thompson to write the documentation for them. What the Hurd and Linus did, was create a reverse engineered backyard version of UNIX, which had open source code, and which would run on a 386, and which was free to download and use, and look at the source, change the source...
What that did was provide a working alternative to Windows. That broke Micro$oft's monopoly. That meant Microsoft (at the time) declared Linux the supreme enemy...
By 2000, most of the world's stock exchanges and financial systems, air traffic control systems, military systems and networks, and 90% of the top 500 supercomputers in the world, ran on Linux. The Internet and the machines that control it, runs on Linux. Google runs on Linux. YouTube runs on Linux. Facebook and Amazon and all the big web sites run on Linux. Android is a version of Linux... the only thing that mostly doesn't run on Linux, is the desktops it was originally written for. And that's mostly down to the business practices of Microsoft.

Never been a more important time for this story, especially for those of us living in the US. We need to collectively remember that Resistance is not only possible, but that others have already shown us the way. I was extremely fortunate to have gotten to meet a real life Resistance hero, when I was 19: my bestie’s grandma had been a member of the Dutch Resistance— she and her friends, as teenagers, used to pretend to be pregnant, crafted fake bellies, and used them to store and transport life-saving false documents. When I met her, she seemed like any other grandma; she made snacks, and when we left, she stood on the porch to wave.
Any of us can step up and resist....and for those of us who are US citizens, it’s imperative. How will history remember us, when undocumented children are already, right now, being held, separated from their families, held in conditions which have already killed several children, and which human rights groups are speaking out against???
Thank you for making and posting this. Now is the time for all of us in the US, to decide what role we want to be remembered for playing.

As always, a thorough & unbiased bio from u and ur team. At the end of many of ur videos, u close out by saying something to the effect of, “While u may not have found this video enjoyable, I do hope u found it to be informative.” Tho having concluded the Ted Bundy bio & others like it, I’ve never once found myself thinking, “I GENUINELY did not find this video enjoyable, but it was indeed informative.”, as I did for THIS particular one. Knowing that the current traits which have now become inextricably linked to all Americans by association with the vile rotted fish head at the top were on full display during youth, only to be cunningly & deceptively masked with a veneer of dignity all toward the effort of self serving image manipulation and unabashed corruption & greed, makes me absolutely sick to my stomach and even MORE appalled by the notion that so many of my fellow countrymen & woman would be so easily deceived. The writing was on the wall, on full display, for anyone who bothered to look as to who and what this person is, yet the carefully crafted facade was all too eagerly latched onto in what can only truly be defined as a cult of personality, devoid of any & all rational logic. The day he orders all his acolytes to drink their kook-aide will be remembered by history as 1 of the most beneficial days in this countries history.

R.I.P Robin, such an spectacular and unique soul! The world is not the same without him and his natural ability to make people laugh, and even cry. My favorite movie he was in, "What Dreams May Come", has seriously been the pillar for me when I suffered from suicidal ideation regularly for years, after being in an abusive (in every aspect of the word) permanently damaging relationship, ending up diagnosed with PTSD at the age of 21. That movie made me feel and see just how much suffering suicide causes, how selfish it is, and the unbelieveably harmful effects it has on people who love you. After watching that movie at least 5 times or more, I couldn't even think of actually killing myself. Now, I still felt like I wanted to be dead, almost every single day, but I didn't want to be the one to make it happen. Especially since I had 2 young boys at the time. I know it was a made up story. But the lesson to be learned from it all is that life really sucks for everyone at some point, some more than others. But it's so much more difficult if you have to endure the battles alone, especially if the one you love, didn't love you enough to keep fighting with you. It's a bitter and harsh reality, but absolutely grounded in truth and understanding. Finding the greater good is a lot easier when you have someone looking out for you. I feel blessed to have been able to grow up watching his brilliant and effortless talent. He could play any character given to him. I will always have a special place in my heart for him.

Hey Simon! Great video, as usual! Just one thing...and I really hate to be THAT kind of nerd....but Shakespeare’s sonnets didn’t have titles. The Fair Youth and the Dark Lady are characters that appear in many of his sonnets. The first 127? 126? Sonnets that we have are referred to as the Fair Youth Cycle, because it is the Fair Youth that appears in these poems. Most of these are directed at a male lover, probably the one to which you referred in the video, though there are many theories about who it might be. The Dark Lady Cycle is basically the rest of the surviving sonnets, and those are directed to an unknown woman, probably an actress of some sort, maybe a prostitute, as the theater district was also the...um...red light district. Another character that pops up in his sonnets from time to time is that of the Rival Poet, who is likely Christopher Marlowe. Anyways....just thought I would point that out, since your videos are usually quite accurate. I mean, I’m sure you are just reading off of a script that was given to you, but hopefully you can pass along this information to the powers that be for future reference and/or edification. Because...learning! Again, really wonderful video! Really enjoyed it!
