Played a pretty big role in for example the Tunesia deal. In general the EU has had some significant anti-immigration policies in the last few years. Not only due to her of course, but the EU is definitely getting rather strict on immigration.

Because the US is on a completely different continent and has nothing to the with the EU? Why do we need the EU when Saudi Arabia exists would be an equally rediculous question. It's a different country in a different continent that has no jurisdiction over the EU whatsoever.

The European council is also elected by the public (directly or indirectly). It is just a representative of each state (usually the prime minister or president). The European council is kind of a European senate, where each country has an equal say. It's a way to give smaller nations a bigger say in what happens. But I agree that it should be the European Parliament that has the say, not the European council, since it is only indirectly and nationally elected, whereas the European Parliament is directly elected. But the European Parliament lacks a lot of powers a democratic parliament should have, and the right to elect and fire Commission members is just one of the many things they don't have proper control over.

Yes, center left. It's mostly labour parties and social democratic parties. The Greens or more left wing on most issues than S&D are, but left and right is wholly insufficient lens to see politics through anyway, so it really depends on how you define the terms whether S&D is central. But the vast majority of political parties in S&D are quite moderate. The far left is basically dead and has been for quite some time in most of Europe anway.
