years ago a buddy of mine talked me into going to the ozarks (missouri) for a 3 day weekend, he had bought a new suv/truck, it would be 3 days of partying, lakes, beaches, boating, camping. sounded great.
we leave the city after work, drive about 5 hours, and get into a small community late friday night. hotels are booked up, it's around midnight so we decide to crash at a rest stop. we're there about 15 minutes, drinking some beers, smoking some weed, i might have been fiddling with my guitar...
then out of nowhere 4 police cars converge on our vehicle, spot lights on us, my buddy puts the weed in a loose boot, they make us get out of the vehicle, search us, search the vehicle, hold us away from each other, start questioning us, "why are you here", where are you from?
they find the weed, "who's is this?" neither of us speak, my buddy decides to say it's his. they arrest him, and leave me behind. i find out where they're taking him, get down there, and they start asking how much money i have, and already know what he has. around $400.
they say the fine is $350 and you have to leave town. no court date, no ticket, no nothing, they just took most of our money, and left us with just enough to get back home.
