I gave our smart TVs a "brain transplant" by using it as a dumb screen powered by a Linux system (Android is based on Linux anyway) and also made them hardwired so they don't use wifi. This lets me run far more applications on them and still run Android apps in an emulator if I really want. If you are serious about protecting the security and privacy of your family then doing this is worth considering. It also allows me to very selectively block content by location, user and time etc. as well as track all usage. The best part is it only cost me a couple of hundred dollars for the additional hardware.

According to Linux user statistics, the platform is used by 2.68% of desktop PCs and laptops globally, which works out to roughly four million devices. The number of Linux users is 32.8 million, in addition to 1.6 billion Android users.
