Who cares about the goverment, the retirement hotspots in Queensland have as much as 30% of the population over the age of 65 and the rest make a living from providing them with goods and services. Those areas face complete social and economic collapse if they cannot be protected. The problem is that the "social distancing measures" is a decision based on the average Australian risk rather than the areas of extreme vulnerability. I am always hopeful but not at all confident that the State and Federal Governments are taking this situation as seriously as they should given the demographic reality in some areas which seem to have been overlooked, e.g. they are worried about the remote aboriginal communities but have said nothing about the coastal retirement areas that are just as vulnerable because even though they are well serviced with health providers they also have a much larger vulnerable population and are harder to protect or isolate.

If they had closed the borders early and completely we would have been OK, but we now have community transmission and if they can't contain that then we will see the usual exponential growth in cases and complete loss of control over the situation. We are currently on a knife's edge.

Why would the Chinese create a virus that cripples their country and harms Han Chinese more than other races?

@jimgiblet So necessary hysteria is OK, hmmm no, how about pragmatic realism informing compassionate action based on demographic data?
