Here is another angle on the question, leave the day as it is, the tension around it is actually good, it leaves open the question of what was done and the consequences of that. If you change the day and do all of the other "symbolic things" then you rapidly run out of things to remind you when really you do need to remember and accept the entire complex reality of history and not just what is currently fashionable.

@Escekar Yes, it has to be that way if you open yourself up to the perspectives of all decent people, society is rich and complex. Holding all that in your mind gives you a sense of belonging to something far greater than yourself. The people that attack you may be sociopaths (1% of the male population) and they are incapable of experiencing empathy, particularly on that huge scale, they literally have the required structures and connections in their brain missing.

@Escekar I have both famous Aboriginal activists and famous English Captains in my family tree, so I literally know we are all family. History is far more complex and intertwined than the zealots would like people to know, because they are using division as a means of empowering themselves rather than the elevation all of humanity as one.
