@DerrickCartercosmostravels For what? You can't predict the future, even if you knew all the variables. What we do know is that in the future at some unknown time there will be another global scale volcanic winter that stalls food production for several years or more as there will not be enough sunlight, so tell me how a civilisation powered by solar cells survives that? How can you plan for that when it could happen tomorrow, or in another 500 years?

@DerrickCartercosmostravels Unless you are talking about fusion power and growing everything in tunnels where the climate and lights are controlled you will not be prepared for what is coming, you will simply be deluding yourself and others that you are doing something meaningful when really it is a futile waste of natural resources and time that should have been spent elsewhere. Do a search for "the worst year to be alive" then tell me what part of that history lesson you do not need to heed. Also never forget that sustainable means "forever" so a threat that is even 500 years away is not something to be ignored, especially if you can never be sure than it will not hit you in 50. The impact of the Tonga eruption recently shows how active Earth's volcanism is and that there is no sign of the risk of volcanic winters diminishing. We may be able to deflect an asteroid, but we have no idea how to stop a volcano from erupting.
