  1. There are dozens of synagogues in the immediate area. Why can't the Jewish community open their synagogues to these poor refugees? Why not just give them a warm and dry place to spend the cold wet nights? It won't cost anything! Just as clergy hid Jews in the church cellars, basements, and attics during WWII, why can't the Jewish community of Chicago shelter these poor refugees in their synagogues?
