The fundamental problem with the F-35 was the USMC insisted on getting a VTOL/STOL fighter for dumb ideological reasons and rather than simply giving them their own shitty VTOL/STOL plane, those requirements were shoehorned into the F-35 design that the USAF and USN were trying to get, which ruined the plane. Well, ruined is a harsh word, and not exactly accurate, but it's close enough to true. The USMC's requirements were in direct contradiction to all the other requirements of the plane, making it less maneuverable, less stealthy, not as fast, with shorter range, and just overall worse than it otherwise would have been.
Looking ahead, at the next generation of fighters which are already being planned for, thankfully it seems the lessons of the F-35 have been learned. The Navy is looking to get its own entirely separate long-range strike fighter to contend with China's anti-ship missiles keeping their carriers at bay. The Air Force is looking for its own entirely separate long-range fighter to escort the new B-21 on penetration missions, and the two planes will not be the same. The Marines will hopefully not be invited to any design meetings.
