Watching this clip silently with subtitles, on the bus going into Manchester (the trains are on strike AGAIN); there is a loud hubbub of non-indigenous noise and non-English language throughout the top deck. Why? I’m a postwar child and my town’s statistics (Bolton) are clearly available for the 2021 ‘census’ (assuming the illiterati filled in the forms truthfully). @downunda107 Hi, Downunda. Good to hear from a fellow Boltonian. You wouldn’t recognise the town now. I was born in 1948 and from what you say, must have emigrated when you were 7 years old. The town was bustling and full of cotton manufacture and heavy engineering and much more, including deHavilland’s at Lostock. The locomotive works were still going strong in Horwich in the 50s, but then cotton manufacture died quickly in the late 50s and many mills were demolished. Every single major shop has now gone from the town centre (Marks and Spencer left for good some 15 months ago and was the straw on the camel’s back). At least going north to the Yorkshire Dales or Lake District clears the mind. Keep well my friend.
