You know, instead of any of 20 much easier and equally 'symbolic' objectives. 🤦 Still with the encirclement nonsense. Russia is not encircling Bakhmut . Why would they even try to do that? They want the Ukrainian army to be able to get in. Wagner has been claiming success after success for months, despite very little tangible gain. Then, when they start making substantial, visible advances and Ukraine is making moves to withdraw, Wagner stops advancing and publicly announces that they're out of ammo and too beat up to keep fighting. Just like that, here come the Ukrainian reinforcements again. Those reinforcements are coming largely from Donetsk, where Russia has been probing daily for a couple months, while massing a large armor force. There is no 'encirclement'. Of the dozens of times they've done this, there have been no encirclements. Always the same play of closing in a 3 sided box and leaving a hole to pour reinforcements through. Then they just kill, kill, kill until Ukrainians stop coming, or theres too many and Russia just backs off and moves down the road to the next objective.

  5. Theyve absolutely dumped several kilotons of ordnance on Bakhmut. Ive been looking for some figures, but its hard find any. Estimating from the Russian side (constituting some 90% of the total), probably at least 20 kilotons of artillery shells and missiles, have hit the city.

  6. Ukraine has been draining defensive positions all over the front, to reinforce Bakhmut; particularly to the south in the Donetsk AO. Ukraine was getting ready to withdraw and then Wagner dragged a wing and Ukraine doubled down. The Donetsk lines are already weak enough for a breakthrough.

  7. You have zero clue what indiscriminate shelling is. Its like when Ukraine wiped entire settlements and towns off the map all around Kiev, shooting blind at a Russian truck someone may have seen in the area.

  9.  @alex__3897  FALSE The strategic value was clear and imperative, until it started looking like Russia could actually take it. Then, it instantly transformed into a vanity project for Putin, because hes just so desperate for any success, no matter how small or meaningless. You know, so he chose the toughest most unwinnable battle in the war for his small symbolic victory and not any of the dozen much easier much more 'symbolic' victories available. They could've completely routed Kharkiv with the men who died in Bakhmut in a month. But, they let Kharkiv go without a fight, because it really didn't have any immediate strategic value.
