  1. most of German documents of the eastern front are mostly destroyed by themself to prevent capture or captured by the red army and preserved in their archieve. What is left are momoirs from Generals that kicked from office by Hitler this include Guderian and Manstein. Most German generals that fight the Soviet army the longest are either dead in battle or capturend and sent to gulag and return in the 60s when public no longer intrested in hearing their story. Thus the most accurate information about the Germans always in the soviet hands.

  2. Benedek Verburg It means the Germans know that the Soviet are out for blood and will kill them for what they did to their homeland. There are no worse hatred displayed in the history on mankind than eastern front. Thats why they fought real hard, because surrender is not a choice.

  4. Casualty figures tell nothing. More if your soldier have aversion to wear helmet in the age of machinegun and altillery. Not to mention equipment disparity. Standard soviet platoon should have at least a machine gun but because of DP shortages up to 1945 they can only be content with sub machinegun and single maxim in your company unless you are in Guard unit in which you get a DP gun in your platoon and two maxims in your company. While Germans have the luxury of equipping all of their platoons with MG 34. Reverse their equipment and the casualty figure also reversed.

  5. Well that tell us you know nothing about the subject. All sources from German perpective are from memoirs written by generals captured in the west and edited by themself, and if you want to see surviving german combat record you can try Russian archieve.

  6. yea but the battle report used by Glantz and House are not propaganda. It just you never read or watch Glanz/House presentation. Here is the truth most of the materials from the German side are memoirs while the source from Russian side are report. you want to know about Glantz report on why Soviet casualty are high? Lack of machine gun in platoon. Soviet can only have 1 mg per company while Germans can have up to 4. This is why Soviet always have trouble in both assault and defense while Germans have easier time. I dont know what propaganda can be manufactured from this fact. Other fact found from the archieve the high casualty suffered earlier is because lack of helmet or they choose not to wear them for various reason.

  7. Lol no, Soviet unit are smaller than German, thus easier to be reinforced or keep at 100%. German unit are larger and because they dont have reliable reinforcement their units are often way below 100%. Even if the soviet have twice manpower they dont throw double number of soldier in battle. Those extra soldier are held in reserve to quickly replace any losses they had.

  8. mokpoly With simple google research you will learn that OKW responsible to everything BUT the Eastern Front. Whatever you find there are irrelevant when talking about eastern front. Go watch "the three alibis" by House and learn how you westerner learn the eastern front through the Germans.

Glantz criticism is basically soviet erased some battles from their official history book but they keep the "Real" record in the archive and Glantz managed to read some. This indicate Soviet record keeping is much better than the Germans. If there's any tailoring its not in the battle record but in the publication. For casualty report, both German and Soviet use difrent standard which resulted the soviet record much higher casualty than it should be while the Germans always record less casualty. Soviet casualty originaly reported 14 millions but then revised to 8.5 million after the fall of soviet union after archieval investigation.

  10. Id rather believe Soviet battle record than any memoirs of German generals. The guy writing battle record cant afford falsifying what he saw or else his unit will get less reinforcement or supplies if he downplay the number of ammo consumed or casualties sustained.

  12. nanoduckling It was Manstein who advice Paulus to stay even Paulus keep asking permission to breakout. Hitler actually always listen to their generals including the logistician. It just German generals aren't that great as the myth said.

  13. Doesnt matter if you are not westerner as long you only accept western narrative you are one of them. OKH oversee anything on the eastern front, not OKW, they are rival organization up to 28 april 1945, 4 days before Hitler commit suicide.

  14. nanoduckling Hitler issue that order after consulting to several of his generals. And if those generals sucks then his decission will sucks too. And you can not ignore big city like Stalingrad while advancing to Caucasus montain. The order itself was clear, From Voronezh move along the southern part of Volga river toward the Caucasus and Stalingrad and some other city are located between them. Also defending riverbank is easier than defending empty piece of land.

  15. nanoduckling Not including those who advise him is also stupid because whatever decision he take, it all because inputs given to him by his generals and if you think Hitler decission is stupid then those who advise him also stupid. Outside the city is an open plain, even Manstein have trouble defending it. And the main advantage taking Stalingrad is to reduce their tank output by 30%, deny easy crossing across the river because Stalingrad have riverboat yard and put guns and machineguns on the riverbanks to destroy incoming transport. The Germans fail their objective because they dont have enough manpower since the begining. Not taking Stalingrad will leave them with exposed flank which will put them in worse position. Also its was Manstein who advise Paulus to stay when he ask permission to redeploy outside the city.

  16. As if the soviet will let it happen. It only need several hand grenades to turn Maikop into sea of flames. The same could happen to Baku and Astrakhan. If Germans skip Stalingrad what they will get in the end will be three burned out oil field a city that keep producing riffles, machine gun, T-34 and river boats. Which also can turn into their safe crossing point and their HQ and a long exposed north eastern flank. Also the area of operation is actually very narrow, between Volga River and Black Sea. A major encirclement can happen if you move too deep into the Caucasus with exposed flank.
