  2. People always forget that in modern combat organization matters more than number. If you have 100 vs 100 but one side have better equipment and supply it could turn into 100 : 0 result. Basically soviet on the first half have poor equipment, organization and supply but gradualy improve over time to the point defeating the Germans on latter half.

Btw German have chronic manpower issue that they start using conscript one week right after invading soviet union and keep lowering their minimum age while the soviet never issue general conscription. They also are not lacking iron and other raw material until Bagration in 1944. They just not efficient with production.

  7. BcroG11 Well, the Germans do have advantage of having more MG and AT gun up to 43 then the soviet have the advantage. Its easy to win aganst superior number of enemy if they only armed with mossin nagant when you have teams of mg 34 on your side. The soviet dont have similiar equipment untill post war when they modernized their DP gun. But up to taht point they have to deal german MG team the hard way.

  9. Those mortars only available in 1943. one 80mm mortar per company, and one 120mm mortar per battalion for total 3x80mm and 1x 120mm in an infantry battalion. Although even in 1943 their mg still lower than germans. One dp per company and two maxim per battalion for total of 3xdp and 2xmaxim in infantry battalion. Geman mg 34 is a versatile weapon. Can act both as heavy mg for battalion asset as light mg for company asset and light support weapon for platoon asset. The amount of lead thrown at the enemy still favors Germans untill Soviet equip half of their battalion with ppsh 41.

  11. Soldier quality the Soviet always better because they are not bound by Versailles. in fact the soviet only have to mobilize their reserve while Germans have to issue general conscription. Average soviet soldier are reservist while average German soldier are conscript. New soviet conscript have 6 months of training while new German coscript have 3 months of training. Officer quality Soviet have it worst because of the purge. They literally kill low-mid-high officer and replace it with useless party member. They eventually replaced by soldier who distinguished themselves in battle and this is why you never see stunning Soviet ace because they leave battlefield and became officer as soon they got those medals.

They can equip every platoon with MG the only reason they can hold for that long and Antibiotics that prevent mass casualty from simple wound or hygiene related issue. To put simply the Soviet are nothing more than medieval army. They don't have enough MG and antibiotics. Its miraculous that they managed to hold that long, not the other way around. Also USSR don't have limitless resources. They choose not to issue general conscription to save their regime and it bite them latter in 1944/1945 when they have to fight in smaller formation because they cant replace their casualty fast enough.

Western front are secondary front just like soviet eastern front. And the soviet have their thin northern (One front to hold the entire Finnish border) and southern front (the Axis control entire black sea) that undermanned for entire time.

  18. HoboTango Actually the frontal armor of Tiger and Sherman and Kv 1 and t-34 are not that difrent because the latter 3 are sloped and 88mm gun are underpowerd for the tonage. Because the soviet can mount 85mm gun on their t-34 and 122mm gunon their is-2, while the American can put 90mm on their M26. German 88 are in the same class as soviet 85mm and American 90mm but both guns are on lighter chasis. Tiger somehow exeed Army requirement by a lot. German army want something 35ton medium and 45 tom heavy but they get 45 ton medium and 55 ton heavy instead.

  19. Tiger is shit because shitty German doctrine. German panzer division consist one heavy tank battalion (50 tanks) and two medium tank battalion (100 each) for total 250 tanks. Back then pz 4 fill the heavy tank spot while pz 3 fill the medium tank spot. But when Tiger came tiger fill heavy spot and pz 4 fill the medium spot. These tank are not equal in speed and cruise range and Tiger will slow down the whole division. Not to mention they are under performing for example Otto Carius 502 heavy tank battalion failed to destroy 31st heavy tank brigade which only armed with 20 kv-1 for 3 year of Leningrad siege. The soviet also use the same doctrine in 42 in which a tank corps consist 20 kv-1 2x20 t-34 and 2x20 t-70. They drop it in favor of 3x21 t-34 and move the kv-1 and t-70 elsewhere (kv-1 to independent tank brigade and t-70 to recon forces) after that they have many sucess that germans have in 1941. Moral of the story dont group slow tank with fast tank. It will slow the whole division down, giving the enemy time to react and smack you in the face with counter attack.

  27. The soviet also have 1 million on the east. Lost half of their western territory, lost their car manufacturing and other military industrial center in Ukraine or Leningrad. The Germans also own other half of Europe. (you wehraboos often forget this) Also Luftwaffle was destroyed in the east in 1943. (Air battle over Kuban) The soviet win battle since Moscow 1941.

  28. Rommel will perform poorly on eastern front. In eastern front they need generals that good at defense because the soviets keep attacking like brain dead zombies even with inedequate logistic. Zhukov only have one blunder that he underestimate the defense of Rhzev, the only hole in his career. There are still better general in the soviet army like Rokkossovsky who is actually a mentor of Zhukov. Still on average soviet have better logistic than germans to the point their daily advance reach 100 km, 5x longer than germans.

  30. You forgot to add that there are no universal conscription in Russia while you will be hanged if you refuse to join Volksturm. Russian conscrip also can have up to 6 months of training and 6 montsh of break annualy while German conscript after 1943 are sent straight into battle and remain there untill he die.

The soviet copy American Detroit Arsenal production method and that is why they managed to produce 55k of those tanks. I doubt they can even produce 5k on their own without any help from the Americans. The soviet always lacking industrial output if you see how much locomotive and ship they have to cancel. Soviet economic was greatly elevated by arrival of lend lease items like grain and canned meat after the disaster of loosing Ukraine and southern Caucasus in 1941-1942. Also there are no swarm of T-34 that is not how they deploy their tanks. What happen in latter war is just accumulation of their earlier failures.

Without American expertise they can only managed to produce 1k per year at full capacity per factory, and they only have three factories in which two of them under German control/siege. That 12k number are cumulative for over 20 years and only 3k of them can be operational. Germany need to do both because they are more industrialized than the Soviet. Their society will collapse without electricity and other home appliance unlike the Soviet which is one step above medieval level technology which can still function with firewood.

  45.  @ArghastOfTheAlliance  Three. Leningrad Locomotive factory, Kharkov Locomotive factory and Stalingrad Tractor Factory. If you want to brought up tank number these three are the most important. And I doubt these three can outpace single German factory at its full capacity without help from the American. They even have to license welding machine from America. Im pretty sure USSR production are pretty much things that were casted. Like Mortar and other artillery pieces. They still struggle producing important weapons like portable machine gun which is responsible for most of their casualty. German weapon production are more "industrialized" meaning they need more complex machinery and care like U-boat, Aircraft carrier and even complex stg 44.

You can read them in memoirs of the soviet soldier that they are 6 months of active duty and 6 months rest where the rebuild villages and cities. The soviet double their number but 50:50 on front line and rear guard duty.

Also modern combat is that good to the point the other side will surender if they dont have ammo. If they indeed are preparing to attack they should at leadt stockpile more ammunition and more fuel and keep their armored forces at least 80% readines, not 20% readiness.

  53. Germans are better at defense because the huge number AT guns and MG they have. basically Soviet in 41 only have 3x45mm at gun for each killometre of front while Germans can have 11 or more. Thats why Germans can easily penetrate soviet defense while every soviet counter attack ended in failure. In mid 43 the soviet have whooping 16x45mm gun per killometre in adition of 44xptrs and 6x75mm gun, and from that point German will always fail with their blitzkrieg. The number of MG tell difrent story since the Germans always have MG at any level from single squad to whole company. The soviet in the other hand only have 2x maxim per company. The amount of lead they can throw to supress the enemy vastly inequal. In 43 they start adding more DP guns to each platoon restore the ballance and finally they have uper hand when they give majority of their soldier ppsh in 44.
