The Royal Australian Navy has bought thee classes of ships from the spanish (LHDs, DDGs and AORs) and EVERY ONE OF THEM have their funnels positioned so that the stack gas fouls the mast and related electronics. The RAN has basically given up and started painting the masts black. I don't think that it is just a british thing anymore.

Napoleon III had his own plans for the americas ( he was, after all, the one who installed that poor, dumb schlub Maximillian as Mexican Emperor) and was quite keen on stirring up trouble for the Union. The last thing that his american imperium needed was a revival of the Monroe Doctrine and he was very enthusiastic about egging on the British to join him in intervention. Fortunately, Lord Palmerston was made if mentally better balanced stuff than to fall for that.

"... my first thought was BB guns." You wouldn't half need a lot of them to move an Iowa.

The only way to resolve the recurring " Would an Iowa's guns move her sideways?" question is for the US government to recondition one and do some emperical testing. Hey, it wouldn't be the stupidest thing that they do with their money, and at least they'd have a nice, working battleship out of it at the end. Write to your congressman, americans. Do it now!

The other reason might have been that the actual crews tended to love cranes as much as they despised derricks. The pre-dreads Triumph & Swiftsure were very popular with their crews, partly because the chileans didn't have a prejudice against cranes.
