  1. A minor point of pedantry, Drach re the pronunciation of Ikara. In the RAN it was pronounced "eye-kara", not "ee-kara". Not that it really matters. It's not exactly a word used conversationally.

  3. I agree that Japan's long term prospects of retaining thw Hawaiian Islands are very poor due to the logistical considerations that you mention. Nevertheless, the Japanese leadership might have considered it as a short-term bargaining chip to force the US into negotiations. They didn't all hold with Yamamoto's Sleeping Giant view.
