  1. When an unaccompanied minor is apprehended CBP has 72 hours to turn them over to family services who must quickly find family in the US or a sponsor to take that child. Once that child has been turned over to that family or sponsor that ends the government’s responsibility to that child. The Government does make a 30 day check in call to those children or sponsor. The child and sponsor are not required to take or return the call. The government reported during a short period of time that a percentage of calls went unanswered. A reporter took that percentage against the total number of unaccompanied minors’ apprehensions and came up with that bogus number of children who the government lost contact with. The Right decided to change that wording from lost contact to missing children then conflated it with the story of minor children working.

Because AOC's concern was due to Trumps immoral separation policy used to charge legal asylum seekers with a crime and separate their children to punishing immigrants for coming to the border looking for humanitarian assistance. This immoral policy that was in violation of US immigration law and international treaty was reversed in federal court. It caused the Trump administration to miss the 72 hour deadline under the Flores settlement to move the children over to family services and cause health problems in over crowded children detainment centers causing some to die in custody. That is not the case under Biden and there are no missing 85000. There were many who were lost under Trump. There is no bigger threat to immigrant children then a low informed Right wing base and the GOP's policies. The Right has lost it's moral compass.
