What Flynn appeared to be doing was playing a back channel between Putin and Trump. Putin wanted the Magnitsky Act Repealed (makes it difficult for Putin and Russian Oligarchs to move money through the West) and it is unclear what Trump wanted or was being Blackmailed. It all started to fall apart when the Kushner, Trump Jr, and Manafort meeting with the Russian Spy was revealed.
