@fturatti No it isn't. There's other countries with a majority poor votebase that don't keep electing people like Chavez.

Canada, Australia, etc. beg to differ.

@kev792 That is hardly unique to Latin American countries, or even the developing world. So it doesn't explain all that much.

@jakeroper1096 The rest of the world isn't trying to 'westernize', just modernize. The two are not the same and attempts to push the former just end up causing trouble. We've already had plenty of bitter historical experience of past 'westernization' (hint: it used to be called 'white man's burden').

@magnasquids7864 Mining and resource extraction comprise the majority of their economies. It's well accepted even by them that they'd be vastly smaller economies without those sectors. Neither has all that much of a manufacturing sector to 'use those resources'. And most natural resource based nations bring the extraction process under domestic control. Only a few extremely poor ones like PNG have to rely on foreign extraction, and even they push to indigenize the process as soon as they can get their act together (for good reason, as PNG's own experience of being screwed over by Australia and Indonesia shows).

@magnasquids7864 "then it would be more overt like US sanctions against Cuba" - yeah no. The US has a long history of covert operations as well, all across Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and S.E. Asia. That's a lot of 'enemies', most of them undeclared.

@magnasquids7864 "those countries should be thankful" - Saying they should be thankful just cos they could've been made to suffer worse is like telling a woman she should be thankful for rape just cos at least the guy didn't dismember or murder her. Or telling every colonized nation they should be thankful just cos at least they didn't lose half their population in the process like the Congo did. Do you even hear yourself lmao?

@bluebottlecoffeeaddict6529 "China is Latin America's newest colonizers." - methinks you don't know what colonization actually means.

@bluebottlecoffeeaddict6529 Yep, you don't know what colonialism is. More than that, you don't know much about Latin American debt levels either, nor who they're mostly to. Good thing I'm not Congolese or I'd really be facepalming at the comparison lol. I am Indian tho, so I'm still slightly facepalming.
