  11.  @oren248   "that problem began after mao won..." - Not really. China has claimed Taiwan for 70 years now and done little about it. Instead it's turned into Taiwans' largest trade partner. It's a status quo both sides have largely been okay maintaining (go ahead and check Taiwan's opinion polls, they aren't anywhere near as combative as the west is - cos they have real stakes unlike spoiled Americans far from danger). Taiwan became a much more contentious issue since 2017. Xi came to power well before that. What changed wasn't China, but America. Specifically Trump decided to launch a crusade to drum up popular support by finding a new enemy now that Americans were sick of the ME wars. And Taiwan has ended up less secure for it. China stands to gain a lot more from Taiwan from trading with it than from controlling a bombed out wreck with a restive population, and they know it. But one thing they'll never tolerate is yet another American staging ground just off their shores (when America faced that with Cuba, it flipped out lol!). Much like Russia isn't obsessed with Ukraine so much as NATO - both nations want the US as far away from them as possible. And looking at Afghanistan and Iraq (wait, did Iraq also do 9/11? Oh right...no), one can imagine why. But not just those two ofc. There's a long list of reasons, none of whom attacked the US. Here's a sampling - Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Cambodia, Chad, Chile, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Savador, Grenada, Gautemala, Honduras, Iran, Laos, Nicaragua, Panama, Sudan, Vietnam, etc. Have fun looking up all those interventions.
