No one cared about Taiwan for decades - before it became a way to hit back at China lol. Taiwans' current popularity has everything to do with geopolitical opportunism.

Ditto Hong Kong, which wasn't a democracy under the British either, but suddenly that matters to everyone in the west. From Pakistan to Saudi Arabia to Chile to Panama to Belarus to a long list of others, you guys will "stand with" whoever happens to be most convenient for your interests.

Between China and the US you mean. Taiwan is just a pawn in that game - to both players. The only people who genuinely care about Taiwan ... are the Taiwanese.

@lenfer8645 China didn't have that money until very recently. The Republic of Taiwan was established in 1949, and even became democratic in the 1980s - all when China was still very poor. No one cared. I wasn't blaming Taiwan for making use of this opportunity - I was pointing out how the oh-so-moral West wasn't moral at all. They didn't care much about Taiwan until it suited their interests to do so.

Or is this the same kind of empty 'moral support' that people often express for Tibet, or the minor development assistance that is doled out to all developing nations? Go ahead, let's see what kind of 'support' you think Taiwan received before it became a convenient way to hit back at a rising China.

If it was still as informative, then yes I would. Stop trying to find excuses for your shallowness. Also, you aren't concerned about presentation either - you didn't suggest the presentation was off, or ways to improve it. You specifically demanded Simon back aka 'fangirling'. There's many ways to present effectively - witness all the non-Simon channels on YT - yet you specifically just want oh-so-sexy Simon back, everything else be damned.

@ChristianDoretti Funny how people assume that just because people express woke sentiments that they're somehow agents of China. Almost like they think it's impossible for anyone to genuinely believe in progressive ideologies without having been conscripted by China to do so.

@ClickNSpam Lol, you think public opinion decides US foreign policy? Saudi Arabia has never been liked by Americans, and yet the US govt. has stood by its side even as it spread the Wahabbi ideology that birthed so much of the Islamic terrorism that even eventually came to bite America in the ass. Pakistan has never been liked by Americans either, yet the US allied with it when convenient. And so on. If you think what the American public thinks matters when it comes to the US govts. operations across the world, you're beyond naive. Most American foreign policy wouldn't be what it is if that was what it was based on.

@ClickNSpam In that case, the US public is nowhere near as moral as they'd like to pretend they are - conveniently palming off the blame for engaging in 'realpolitik' to politicians. Going by your perspective, they're as responsible for said realpolitik and self-serving geopolitical opportunism as their govt. is. Which is fine, if they owned it. But no, they like to pretend righteousness, morality and humanitarianism is what animates them, that the scheming and military interventionism all over the world is the fault of the 'powers that be', 'establishment', 'deep state', what have you. But if they're the ones who influence it, then they share the blame and are nowhere near as good as they'd like to think.
