  4. Btw, if there was a democratic election in China tomorrow, whatever govt. was formed would most likely continue a lot of China's policies that the West doesn't like. Because there's no reason to think the Chinese people wouldn't support those things - they advance not simply the CCP, but the interests of China itself after all. So claiming the South China Sea? Quite likely popular. Claiming Taiwan? Since there's currently no terrorist insurgency to sour the populace off that idea, they'd most likely support it (plenty of other democracies also have territorial claims that they haven't given up - for example, the very democratic UK went to war over a bunch of islands halfway across the world). Hell, even if there was an insurgency they'd likely support it - just look at the behaviour of democratic Israel, or India. Ditto with Hong Kong. And the further integration of Tibet. There's just no reason why the Chinese people would be opposed to these things - they anger the West, but the Chinese people would care about what helps China, not take their cues from foreign nations. About the only thing that might very well change is the Xinjiang internment camps, which the people may view as terrible. So yes, democracy in China may very well be a human rights triumph, but don't try to pretend it'll sort out all the tensions - you'll still be locked in conflict over the South China Sea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Cos at the fundamental level these things are not about the CCP, but about the interests of China itself, as a country with its own aims and aspirations, versus those of the US trying to preserve its superpower privilege to shape the world how it likes.
