Those "patriots" are fortunate to live in a country as tolerant as the United States. Imagine how this would've been handled by security forces in Russia, China or North Korea.

Yes, anyone suggesting that the insurrectionists were just peaceful protestors should have to explain why it wasn't their fault that officer Hodges with his arm pinned in the doorway was screaming in agony.

A call from Trump to mobilize the National Guard would've stopped that violence much sooner. But when he refused all pleas from staff and family alike to make that call, Trump's impeachment became necessary. Most Republican congressmen & congresswomen probably agree the guy is guilty, but they were too afraid of losing their seats to do the right thing. Disgraceful.

@shockwavecg RE: "the police and security guards shouldn't have let them in the building." How about the ones who let themselves in- like the guy from Rochester who used a stolen police riot shield to smash out a window?
65
@Kar98_Karl But they can't just walk in any time they feel like it- especially when their intent is to prevent congress from carrying out it's official duties. That's illegal.

@2ndamendmentmf366 RE: "but people acting like they ran up in the capital with guns.." Did you hear Trump ordered that people who showed at the rally should not have to go through metal detectors? His reasoning was "those are my people; they're not here to harm me." He didn't really seem to care if anybody else was going to get hurt. And it turned out some of his people were armed, had attached spears to the ends of flag poles, one guy had brass knuckles, and there was another one in a tree who had an AR-15. And which police officers allowed them to pass by? I have seen plenty of footage of rioters pushing cops out of their way, picking up barriers and tossing them at security, and there's the ones who let themselves in by smashing windows with a police riot shield.

@luchaluchalucha They blocked city streets, filled the air with truck fumes and the nonstop blaring of horns, residents (some of them children) couldn't sleep, access to the local businesses was cut off, some protestors were expecting the food banks to feed them, one guy was roughed up for taking some video of their encampment, the Terry Fox memorial and the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier were desecrated. The people of Ottawa wanted their lives back, so those protestors had to go.

Trump's response when Pence's safety was brought up during the riot: "Who cares?" @JohnE-tb1wn: RE: "Pence said Trump “betrayed him” he didn’t. It’s was intended to be a peaceful protest. Trump was not in the wrong." Trump wanted Pence to break with a tradition every administration before had honoured: certifying election ballots. And when Pence decided to do his duty to the US constitution, Trump tweeted this to the people he sent to the Capitol: "MIKE PENCE LET US DOWN." What happened next? Surprise! Trump's supporters went berserk and started chanting "HANG MIKE PENCE!" And even though he knew a riot had broken out at the Capitol, DONALD J. TRUMP refused to send in the National Guard to stop it. Can you explain why?
22
@annali5017 They shouldn't have attacked the Capitol and threatened elected officials' lives.
22
@2ndamendmentmf366 Good thing for the rioters they kept it to flag poles, fire extinguishers and bear repellent, because if they'd taken guns into the Capitol Building just imagine the kind of prison time they'd be doing for it right now.
22
@nunceccemortiferiscultu7826 They weren't unarmed. Have you seen the surveillance footage where they spot the guy in a tree with an assault rifle? Some of them brought brass knuckles and spear-tipped flag poles. Others used barricades as projectiles or just stole equipment from the cops.
20
@annali5017 Re: "They aren’t fortunate, they are being put in prison like an animal." They acted like animals, and most of them seem to get sentences of a few weeks, or just probation and a fine.
19
@UnWrapWJRap Evidence?
15
Vote, everybody. To stop him you gotta get out and vote. RE: @Deadshot4396: You failed." Like Republicans failed in 2020, and 2012, and 2008. One election you're up, next one you're down. That's politics, Deadshot. 🤷♀
14
Republicans believed Trump's lies and started chaos.
12
@trumpist No, Trump wasn't at the Capitol (even though he said he would be marching with his followers). He instead went back to the White House and watched all these people break the law in service to his ego.
12
@eziokill9112 Not even his then acting secretary of defense confirms Trump's claim. There seems to be no evidence of Donald Trump offering extra security for the Capitol, and when his supporters did become violent, he refused even his own son's plea that he send in the National Guard. Why?
11
@Void_Adventures RE: "But it was too risky with all the reporters and stuff." What about the risk to the outnumbered police officers? They didn't matter?
11
The fact that they were attacking a hallowed building like that on a day when the peaceful transfer of power had been respected for hundreds of years: this is what made January 6th a terrorist attack.
10
Trump's own head of election security said 2020 was the most secure in US history. Trump just lied so his followers would back him as he tried to illegally overturn the results.
10
He tells them what they want to hear, and they snort it like cocaine.
10
Can you name a member of Antifa proven to have taken part in that riot?
9
It's the fact that Trump invited all those people to come there. He told them a big lie about how the election was stolen from him (now he's saying "I lost by a whisker"), he asked them to march to the Capitol during certification, then he tweeted "Mike Pence let us down," and when the place erupted in violence, Trump refused to send in reinforcements to stop it. That decision alone makes him totally unfit to be president, and the only reason he wasn't successfully removed from office was because the elected Republicans were too scared to go against the wishes of their MAGA constituents.
9
@thiccchungo1041 If Trump said "Hitler wasn't that bad" or "Adolf actually had some good ideas," I am pretty sure a lot of Trump republicans would nod their heads in agreement and dutifully defend him against any "snowflake" who would disagree. That, unfortunately, is where the Republican Party is at these days.
9
They didn't even rig it last time. It was all Trump telling his big lie.
9
True Republicans have become a minority in their own party. It's now largely a cult devoted to Donald Trump.
8
Doesn't excuse what Trump supporters did at the Capitol.
8
MAGA's a personality cult. They don't care about anything except what Trump tells them to believe.
8
And psychological profiles of both Trump and all those who fervently believed everything he told them.
8
Trump's violent supporters were liberals? 🤕
8
That's Trump's claim. When the violence broke out there, would be interesting to know why Trump refused to call in the National Guard.
7
Vote. Everybody. Get out and vote.
7
I blame those 11 million people who didn't bother to vote this time.
7
Those people weren't acting like real Republicans. But you are, and thank you.
7
RE: "why didn't the people who could actually mobilize them there do it." Could it be they were waiting on Trump's order (which never came)? RE: "Fact check first" Here's a fact: because the commander in chief refused all pleas to send in reinforcements, it was Pence (trapped in a Capitol building loading dock) who had to make the call.
7
@Void_Adventures RE: "...where [--] were the Marines who were supposed to be protecting the Capitol?" From what I have heard, Virginia. And when violence broke out, Trump refused all pleas to call them in. Why?
7
MAGA is a personality cult, and we saw this kind of slavish devotion to a leader in Germany during the 1930's and 40's.
7
Where's your evidence?
7
It's a cult.
7
The way they sent their message was completely illegal. And how can we disregard breaking through barriers, smashing windows to gain entry, threatening elected officials, and assaulting hard-working police officers?
7
HoppingGnome, you think those shouting "HANG MIKE PENCE!" and the ones who brought the gallows with them weren't contemplating violence?
7
It's the opposite. This is just disgruntled voters believing the lies of a bitter opponent who couldn't admit he lost.
7
@camcambambam: That was bad. But it doesn't excuse Trump and his rioters.
7
Nah, it was just Trump lying to his supporters to try and overturn the results of the election. He's the ultimate sore loser.
7
@ForteMagala And the reason for that was voter apathy, Forte. Trump's 2020 fraud claims were nothing but a lie- and Harris's camp respects democracy too much to use his methods.
7
But video of Trump supporters smashing windows, forcing their way through doors and getting violent with police: that's not propaganda. That's just what happened.
7
Rioting is wrong no matter which side of the political fence you sit.
7
The biggest favour the Republicans could do for the Democratic party is run Trump again as their candidate.
6
One in particular: Donald J. Trump, president of the United States.
6
Amazing how back in 1996, the Republicans, the party of family values, were adamant a president who'd engaged in an affair with a flirtatious secretary was morally unfit to occupy the Oval Office. And now a man who (1) bragged about groping women, (2) was found guilty of sexual assault, (3) lied to all his followers about the last election being stolen thereby setting off a riot was the GOP's nominee for president. The Republican party, and all it stood for, no longer seems to exist.
