  2. An old 'Desert Rat' would have a pint or two in the village pub on a Sunday when I was growing up. When into his second glass, he would invariably raise it and proclaim 'I saw Rommel!' R.I.P. both.

  3. Agreed, he might even have become West Germany's first post - War leader. Another Rommel anecdote....While fighting the Desert War, he invited a captured British Officer to have tea in his H.Q. Later, when the British soldier was being transported to a P.O.W. camp by train, he attempted escape, via a window. Though swiftly recaptured, Rommel was duly informed of this incident. Apparently, he found it tremendously amusing. Rather a pity Hitler was not regarded as an artist of merit. It might have spared the World five years of insanity. Hess was somewhat more tragic...
