As petty as their case sounds... I think I'm on the side of the newlyweds. Unless it can be proven that they forced guests to RSVP, or lied about them having to pay if they did... it's on the guests themselves for saying they'd come when they didn't intend to. RSVPs aren't the sort of thing you should do on a whim anyway.
