It serves multiple purposes and its mostly down to the corruption of power and influence inherent in human affairs, which has long been kept without much check and a product of the failures of modernity, hence why we have post-modernity reacting to it and a nostalgic counter reaction. It is now running amok, and playing out in the latest incarnation of the culture war that the mainstream media find themselves caught up in, and as time passes it gets worse and worse until it all boils over and manifests itself in wanton physical violence.
