'They' should never have schemed to join the UK to the EU federal project - it was never in their power to do so, because there is no reason to assume the UK electorate ever wanted it.

tomlinid Compared to what though? Who can really say what our future inside the EU would look like? As a country we are wealthy so the world sees us as a potential customer also our expertise and standards are well renowned making our exports viable. So in theory we should be able make a go of it. I'm reasonably confident that the EU is not really in a position to punish the UK if indeed it wanted to, as we do buy a lot from EU countries. I think we need to get over this 'second referendum' stage and just get on with it. Like anything worth doing - there are some risks/regrets involved, but you make it work. At 52-48 I personally think we've had a close escape.
