The point is that China has a way of going off half-cocked ... and I'd ironically say that it is not because they are too democratic. The historic autocratic nature of the Chinese government has been very bad for China. They seem to be moving away from that and freeing their people to work, but they are not free politically, thus it keeps the same possibility of doing more dangerous stuff by fiat of a central government. China is amazing, but should the West be fearful of it.

I read a thing once that said that people can do well with two things ... in any kind of government, rule of law and infrastructure. Of course that infrastructure probably needs to be open and understandable. Democracy cannot work in a world that is so large - except representative, but now the only ones that get representation are the very rich and their goal is to increase that, and it has had toxic side effects on the world and its people. We need solid human rights for everyone

yes, people are funny, you cannot use their stated opinions for anything, they often for whatever reason do not tell the truth, and sometimes when they do - they don't really know what they are saying - they speak from ignorance. Ask a Southern Slave if they were happy, I'm sure a lot of them thought so. We need objective metrics to more closely equalize people, then they might be able to be honest.

I hope he is not talking up China as a great government - the reason China is doing so well is because the government is more hands off, as opposed to coercing, stealing from and killing people like it has always done. All governments are problematic, because they are all static - there needs to be a way to create a government that reforms and evolves itself, and keeps the rich and the strong private interests from taking it over.

All the West/US has done is refine their old game of putting in "representatives" of local people in power through propaganda and marketing who make noise like they represent their people,but who are really working for large corporations whose managers&goals are hidden but who have a long history of stabbing their own local people in the back for labor and resources ... it happens all over the world, this model has even been used now for the President of the US. People want real freedom

this is a useless argument. both japan and china were great countries ... like all countries of the past they got into the empire meta-narrative and brought ruin on themselves. china just needed to harness the power of their mono-culture, but most other countries do not want that. don't tell me chinese do not seek power or rule, i see it in the corruption between chinese in silicon valley, it is a race war inside a country that was trying to make that obsolete. US has no defense for this.

Oh God ... sure, let a thousand flowers bloom! This guy makes some great points and this is a good talk, but I don't really know where he is coming from or what China's intentions are. He says they are against corruption but the best and most corrupt people I have ever seen in corporations are Chinese working together to take over departments in American corporations. So, overall, I don't know what to make of this, though some thoughtful points were raised.

Yes, China's model cannot be exported ... so they just absorb other countries, such as Tibet, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Nepal, Burma, etc. Believe me, just because China is not as militarily active in the world as the US does not mean that they are not thinking and planning about the most efficient way to combat the US and to export, or impose their system .. which by the way is racist in a way the US/West system is not. Can we see this guy as a PR guy for China?

It is well "formulated" and it is good to hear from a Chinese about the Chinese system. Maybe both countries could have more conversation and find things they both can do better ... but you are making the mistake of just taking massive growth statistics and translating that to "success". The US has no Ai Weiwei - that is someone the government oppressed for expressing opinions and making art.

I do really respect China for having the courage to implement its "one-child policy", this should be world law, or anyone who seeks to have children should be allowed one free that their country pays for and invests in, but after that all costs should be on them.

The great thing about China is the monolithic society ... with no democracy they can focus on anything. They tried many crazy ideas, but just one or two need to pay off big for giant gains to be made. That is the market, and they can turn on a dime if they need to ... that's great. it does not make them good, moral, democratic, free, or not a threat to other countries ... ask Tibet. If China perfects this totalitarian system what if they turn their heads to aggression?

Since whatever he is saying ostensibly has little to do with his venture capital ... we don't know what his motive is or what he is selling. He makes good points, but none of those points lead to any actions. He is a superb critic or the West, I like that, I am too, but what he wants ... who knows. The West has growing corruption because it cannot come to terms with being swamped by foreigners when we profess democracy. We'll be left with nothing if we cannot save our culture.

This sounds suspiciously like ... China: we used to be bad but now we're perfect. My belief is that every person needs human rights along the lines of the socialized countries of northern Europe. Once we get rid of slavery and coercion, there is no need for war, so much money saved, no need for huge growing populations, then focus on production efficiencies and educating and developing the population. Also needed is a strong but professional, non-military police force.

JUST elections, as the power elite has evolved them in the west - do not produce democracy, justice, human rights or environmental stewardship, they are just part of the marketing PR system, and from what this guy says, it's the same in China, just slightly different institutions. All counties are taking a military government shape, in the west we cover it by pretending we are still a democracy, but that is hardly true. it sure doesn't make China good, just efficient at war when it is ready.

That is a great point ... the morality of China is anything goes that works. Even the death penalty does not stop the corrupt ones from taking the gamble. I'm sure that's not just China, right now the whole world is roiling in a kind of cold war mostly fought with money and propaganda. If you are not in a cental comittee or party elite you have no security. human rights for all!

This is why any political/social system needs a fairness doctrine: How can we hear opposing views to these ideas and claims? There needs to be in every expression of political/social ideas the ability of people to ask questions and other people to present opposing points of view. It is good that merit is a big factor in China's government ... but what are the criteria for "merit"? How can that be verified? He's right about both Bush and Obama, they were basically political appointees.

Because elections are totally rigged. I think China is right to maintain a strong government that can combat corruption. All any criminal organization need to do is to analyze any system and find its weak points ... this was done in the US 50 years ago, the country was attacked from the inside and the government taken over by what were virtual fascist, the followons of the group that tried to unseat FDR and may have killed Kennedy. Since that time, they rule for their own good, for empire.

The idea that China is some miracle is just wrong ... what happened with China is that China all along should have been a great power, but the same encrusted corruption that can happen to any system got in the way. Back in the 1300's or so ?? China had the largest navy in the world, and then they withdrew. All this time China's government has been its own worst enemy, something the US is now finding out about can happen. The problems of China and the US now threaten the world.

OK, I'd be willing to stipulate that China's party architecture is new and improved, perhaps the best in the world at finding members and allowing them to rise to the top. HOWEVER, this is what the US has done as well, look at Obama, he came from nowhere. This is just a facade if opposition and competeing ideas cannot make it into the public marketplace of ideas, and China censors the GD-ed Internet for goodness sake ... what good is Democracy or social mobility if people are not informed?

Thanks for replying ... I think you are right ... so, my suggestion would be to realize that all human groups can be corrupted, but public ones as opposed to private ones have a mechanism to recover - so the GOVERNMENT - needs to be some number of times stronger than any several private institutions - and the ownership society is the exact opposite of that - we need more and stronger public institutions, otherwise the faceless, nameless private entities take over for good.

Good point but I don't see massive numbers of people in China benefitting, they may be a bit happier because they went from horrible to just miserable. All these countries foment hate and war, and then shrink their active elite down to wage war while commandeering the labor and resources that should belong to the people. At least the meta-narrative should give a basic place to start a democratic discussion, it's just that it is so easily derailed and ruined by anti-democratic powers.

The thing here is that the speaker is railing, yes railing against the meta-narrative, linear-progression, but he is creating his own sequential narrative by setting up a sequence of hand-waving logic and conclusions based on nothing but wisps of the faintest logic he strings together. He talks all around this but he never defines a problem or suggests a solution. This is a performance, the world needs less performances and more calm discussion.
