As for Donbass the situation there is not as crystal clear. It might remain an area of low-intensity conflict for long, if Kiev leaders do not agree to a confederation status to it. Reintegration of it into Ukraine by military means will open a witch hunt for separatists throughout country in most brutal form of ethnocide. So Donbass separatists understand they they are cornered and would resist invasion by all means at their disposal. Russia cannot afford to ignore the ethnocide of Russians throughout Ukraine and would aid Donbass militarily.
