  2. I come from the East End of London and am continually mistaken for an Australian, particularly by Americans. The reason for that is most of the convict who ended up in the penal colonies came from the East End and took the accent with them.

  8. Although English I love the Irish & you are right we claim the good ones & reject the bad & that goes for the Scots as well but..... Shackleton himself referred to himself as "Anglo Irish. "

  9. In response to the guy's request for other incidents - In South Africa, for awhile, Great Whites were known as "The Tommy" shark, "Tommy" being a generic name for British soldiers. During the Boer War a British troop transporter hit some rocks relatively close to the shore in S. Africa during a storm. I'm not too sure of the numbers taken but a lot of troops were lost to sharks, mostly Great Whites.

  11. Lot of people don't realise that if you put someone from my neck of the dangerous woods - London's East End & an Aussie together, a non native speaker would have a job telling the accents apart, that is because most of the convicts, who weren't hung, came from the East End!
