Yes, for those who collect a broad assortment suddenly having to pick just one as "your only rifle" (or pistol) is a problematic question. There are a lot of guns that seem really cool or great on paper, until you actually get to sit down and run a 100 rounds or so through one, then some of the allure evaporates. I think it is a durn shame the US never fielded a lighter US 1917 carbine, LoL. It is also sad that Remington never made a carbine version of their Model 81. Because of modularity I have to kind of concur with an AR lower as being at the core of the one gun scenario. I mean a 5.56 upper for general use, a 450 SOCOM for use against rogue lions and marauding polar bears, but still it technically is only just 1 gun by US standards. Then there is the question of time frame, i.e., just one gun from the 19th century. For me Martini Henry, no question. But someone else (never having fired an MH) might say Sharps, Rolling Block, etc. Then what is the best caliber question. Oh my. To use against what? 22 LR, .30-06, .5.56? Choices. Etc.
