But on the other hand the U-boats didn't stop Britain from sending men, equipment and supplies basically anywhere the British wanted to send them, from Russia to North Africa to India etc. The Arctic Convoys were crucial for the USSR in late 1941, and so was the influx of men and material into North Africa in 1941/42. Comparatively very little was stopped by U-boats.

  2. Even a lot of food was luxury unnecessary items. Bananas, oranges, cocoa, rice etc. The British replaced many luxury foreign food imports with their own home grown fruit and veg. Dig For Victory was a massively successful campaign. You don't need to import bananas and oranges when you grow your own apples and plumbs.
