When I look at Halsey's action at Leyte Gulf, I think back to what Spruance did at the Marianas a few months earlier. Spruance stuck to his guns, held his position as a covering force for the landing force and let the Japanese come to him. There was zero need to go charging off and seeking battle with the pitiful remains of the IJN carrier fleet at Letye Gulf. Halsey was an amazing Admiral in the Solomons campaign. But by 1944/45 the war was to complicated for him. Spruance was the more cerebral thinker. And far less prone to glory seeking. Edit- Also going to add that Spruance had the foresight to use his Battleships as trip wires. He arrayed them in a line in between his forces and the likely approach routes of the Japanese aircraft. This broke up a good part of the Japanese attacks and diluted what attacks made it past.

The Navy kept up a steady if small stream of supply runs to Guadalcanal until larger supply runs could be done. APDs were the main carriers of these supplies. APDs also carried elements of the first air groups to the island.
