Speaking on the Sydney, wasn't her Captain newly transferred from a shore posting ?? I've always heard that as a reason why the ship was so close to the Raider and/or somewhat lax in its battle preparations. Not trying to dishonor the dead. It would have been incredibly interesting to see how the war on the Great Lakes would have gone had the war extended another year or two. Both sides were absolutely going to the max in construction. Id love to see to some of the crazier designs they could have come up with. Lastly, I believe the US Marines/Army in the Pacfic preferred destroyers to be the On Call fire support ships. They could respond much faster to calls for fire, and the blast effects of a 5inch shell were much less then a 8inch, 16inch so you could drop the shell much closer. Fantastic video as always Drach.

@benwilson6145 ahhhhh ok...thank you much. So it was his first command but he knew his business.

@WALTERBROADDUS nope I didn't forget. Battleships are still slower to respond to calls for fire, the secondaries on a battleship are not tied into the primary fire control for one. And battleships have to anchor or patrol much further away from shore then a destroyer. The big BBs were excellent for hitting fixed targets. But the destroyers were best for supporting the troops on the ground when rapid, quick and accurate fires were needed.

@tomdolan9761 I wouldn't say he was a bad Captain until after the damage was done. His conduct post "battle" were pretty terrible.
