Because the early American Navy was so small, it could afford to pick the best available men for service. Now at times those men maybe weren't the ideal candidates, but they were still good stock.. The American merchant service payed ridiculously higher wages and offered better conditions so many many potential recruits signed on with them instead, and I can't blame them.
But the life of a sailor in the Navy was attractive to some apparently.
Also, interestingly enough, and this is not covered enough in various books, the crews of many early American warships had a sizeable minority of black sailors. On the Constitution in particular several entire gun crews were black only. I believe it was Issac Hull who cited many of them for bravery. Saying they fought like devils, stripped to the waist, singing and chanting as they loaded, fired the big 24s. Even though Captains weren't supposed to hire black sailors, many openly did and apparently the Navy had bigger problems and ignored it.
Fantastic video as always Drach.
Im now 8 DryDocks away from my 100th episode. Glorious day indeed.

Fantastic video as always Drach, always love getting off work Saturday morning and seeing a Patreon notification from you. A couple of my thoughts. Firstly, I'd LOVE a t shirt with a choice of sayings available to choose from. That would be fantastic, hopefully there is an option for a 100 percent cotton shirt for us people in hot climates.
Secondly is that seeing you with a beard kinda surprised me but then I realized you fit in perfectly with the Elizabethan era sailors and swashbucklers. I could see you captaining a race built galleon hunting for some Spanish gold. You and David Fletcher have properly amazing facial hair. Thirdly , I think if the Japanese had been forced to keep Yamato in port due to a lack of fuel, and she been captured. I think she would have been taken back to the US, taken to pieces and studied extensively. I'm sure the US Navy and even British Navy(I could see them being involved) would have made extensive drawings, studys and comparisons to their ships from what they learned.
I think pieces and parts of the ship would have been preserved. Maybe an entire main gun turret. But the hull of the ship would have been used for conventional weapons testing and other things like that. We would at least have a much more comprehensive understanding of the Yamato class.
Fourth and lastly, if Hood AND Prince of Wales had been sunk at Denmark Strait along with the Bismarck and PE. That would have been a collective shock to the British core. But it would have spurned the Royal Navy to do something about it. And as you said, Vanguard would likely see the water far sooner, maybe even late 43. And maybe a Lion or two by early to mid 45. Maybe they would have started working on a 6th KGV as well.

@theguyeverybodylikes9667 at least one each of the Littorio, Richelieu, Queen Elizabeth, Colorado, Clemson, La Fantasque, Black Swan, Dreadnought herself, USS Saratoga, Vanguard, USS New Orleans the heavy cruiser, USS Enterprise(both the carriers) one of the T class submarines, the USS Franklin, Derrflinger, Tiger and lastly the HMS Victorious and HMS Ark Royal.
I'm listing ships ships that were scrapped and not lost in battle.
So that means my list of Japanese ships was very thin.

This is my opinion and I know it's not worth much but here I go.
I think the current US Navy system is a sham. It's also very stupid.
I think it should be
Carriers- historical ships or people who were so legendary, they deserve a carrier name. So Nimitz, Roosevelt are ok but the rest should be Wasp, America, Langley, Ranger etc etc etc
Cruisers- Important battles in naval history and large cities above a certain population.
Boomers- States
Attack boats- Marine life or historical names such as Nautilus, Argonaut etc
Destroyers- Important people in naval and Marine history, same as always.
Frigates- Rivers like the monitors of the Civil war or smaller cities.
Amphibs- Marine battles and important places in Marine lore.
Though Amphibs with flight decks named after certain carriers is good too since you only have so many super carriers.
Support ships- Resupply and the like should be named after important civilian figures who shaped the Navy. Mine sweepers and layers, rescue ships etc should be named in the British style like Action, Battle, Daring etc etc.

If this had been a real situation. I think Kurita seeing ACTUAL battleships and cruisers would cause him to have a total meltdown. Maybe his Chief of Staff could take command, maybe not. Where as Oldendorf may not be the most creative Admiral ever, but he is rock steady in a crisis. And he knows what his force can and can not do. He also fully understands radar and how it can change the balance of things. I think he would order his lighter forces to open fire and keep firing till they sink, or the barrels melt. A 4.5inch, 5inch and 6inch shell in a little drizzle wont do much, but an absolute tidal wave of them can really seriously hurt your upper works, take out primary and secondary guns, and as Drach says, cause your lovely pure O2 filled Long Lances to explode. Lastly I think the American crews, particularly gun crews have better training, more experience and it would show itself as the battle goes on. As we saw in the actual battle, American crews will fight even with most of the ship wrecked around them. Johnston's Mount 5 gun captain was hollering for more shells, aiming through the direction vison scope with Japanese ships at point blank range. Like something from the days of sail. That's not to say the Japanese sailor was not brave, cause they were. Impossibly brave and steadfast until the end. But they were let down by leadership and technology. I love the way you did this video Drach. And I love the Texel video too. Keep it up sir.
