All I can find is that it has been gradually developing, so probably not due to a stroke, unless he had a series of mini-strokes. As we age, we lose neurons, and various types of plaques can build up in the brain. This often results in memory difficulties. If the damage was isolated to the speech centers of the brain, that would result in aphasia. Or, perhaps he had a head injury, that the public was not made aware of. I do hope it is not due to a malignant brain tumor.

You made this ignorant comment twice. Neurosis or psychosis is often due to an imbalance of neurotransmitters, so can be corrected with medicine. Aphasia is due to damage in the speech center of the brain, and is irreparable.
