Zakaria is not a computer engineer and does not have the capability to understand what cutting China off from existing technology does. China has always relied on development by others, often stealing the result of that expensive development. But, by cutting Huawei off from all of this American, European and Israeli technology, they are stopping this Chinese ability. Huawei knew they might be cut off from Google Play, and had prepared their own alternate app store. But, they had not realized they would also be banned from using Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp. They do not have viable alternatives, and will not develop them in 90 days. They will no longer be able to use the newest versions of Android. Of course, Linux is free, but all the work google has done to make a cell platform will be off limits. They are also cut off from using ARM, which allows chip development using VHDL or Verilog. There is no alternate chip design platform, and this platform took about 20 years to optimize. They can no longer use Intel, Xilinx or Atmel chips, or any of the chips the Israelis have developed. Israeli engineers who were doing development of Huawei, who also have US citizenship, were all fired Monday. That really hurts Huawei much more than it hurts them since Israel is the world leader in security. Huawei no longer has the use of any development platform, the best engineers, a robust O/S, or any of the apps that have changed our lives. They have been thrown into an technological stone age. This death blow to China's biggest tech firm may change its behavior.
