@James-to7pi Not always. I was offered a full ride to an Ivy League university, because my maiden name wasn't obviously Jewish. But, when they asked me which dining hall I wanted, and I requested the kosher one, they withdrew the scholarship offer.

@James-to7pi Yes. My next door neighbor is a Korean-American. Her husband has a typical English name. When her children applied for colleges, she told them to leave the race part blank, as she knew being half Asian would hurt them.

Also eliminate sports scholarships. No other country allows their universities to be used as farm teams, for professional sports.

@LadyLawyerG If you only look at test scores, you end up with better students, who can actually benefit from university. Racism is wrong, even when you're the one benefitting from it.

Sounds good, as long as you also end sports scholarships. Being a good athlete does make one a good student. In fact, many times those two characteristics are mutually exclusive. Make colleges about education, and stop being farm teams for organized sports.

Except that's not true, when one is applying for a programming job. A MA from MIT or Cornell carries more cachet, than one from OGI (where I went to grad school).

@TheOne5872-n3n As a Canadian, your ancestors escaped from slavery, long before the Civil War. And the experience of slavery is not unique to black people. Slavery has existed at least as long as agriculture. You aren't the only group in history to be transported as slaves, to another continent. My people were transported to Europe and North Africa (from Asia), and treated far worse, for far longer, than Americans from Africa. As soon as repression was eased up, just a little, we thrived, and nobody even gave us set asides. The word 'slave' comes from Slav, because so many of those people were sold as livestock. Stop pretending you are uniquely put upon, when other people have had it much worse, yet survived, and succeeded, despite this.

The problem is, crappy schools might give As to really poor students. If we're going to use a single measure, standardized test scores would be the correct metric.

@TheOne5872-n3n So get rid of any racial set asides, and provide catch up classes, in community colleges, for those who come from poor school systems. Don't admit students, who don't have the skills or aptitude for college, just to even the score.

@TheOne5872-n3n You can't buy good SAT scores. I know some rich parents try, but they fail. I remember many of my friends took all sorts of SAT prep classes, but I didn't have time, and still got a perfect SAT score, which they did not. My daughters' friends had SAT prep classes, which my ex and I felt were useless, yet my daughters both scored better than their friends. That's why standardized test scores are the best measure, they can't be coerced or purchased, by an aggressive parent. A student is either intelligent, or they are not.

@elkslayer7399 But, that Vietnamese kid, just like Korean kids, Chinese kids, Jewish kids, and all the others whose family originated in Asia, weren't given a free ride. Before affirmative action, there were quotas against our admission, and after affirmative action there were quotas hurting our admission. Back in the 1970s, I was offered a full ride to Yale. But, when they realized I was Jewish, that offer was withdrawn. Yet, there is no affirmative action to compensate for the discrimination against us.
