  1. That's because chickenpox isn't caused by a poxvirus, but a herpesvirus, herpes varicella zoster. Herpesvirus has an unfortunate tendency to take up residence in nerve ganglia, and reinfect when adaptive immunity drops, either because of stress or age. Hence cold sores and shingles. Shingrex does a fantastic job of increasing adaptive immunity against varicella zoster.
