A little over a year ago, as countries were rolling out their vaccines, China bragged that Sinovac, an inactivated virus vaccine, would be much better than the mRNA vaccines, which only code for the spike protein. In a twist of fate, it has turned out that, for reasons science cannot fully explain, the mRNA vaccines are much more effective, at evoking a lasting immune response, than any previous type of vaccine platform. It might be due to the modifications that must be made, so that the body does not recognize the mRNA as foreign, but instead translates it into protein. Whatever the serendipitous reason, Sinovac only seems to induce a B cell response, which can be evaded by mutation, while the mRNA vaccines induce both B and T cell memory. So, while the developed world (especially those countries with better vaccine compliance than the US) has sufficient population immunity to recover, China is really suffering from the newer, immune evasive, variants. This is what happens when science is dictated by the state, rather than just being funded to flourish. China is now developing its own mRNA vaccine, which they claim will be much better than either Pfizer or Moderna.
