Ships using SoNAR were limited to 3-8 nauts speed. That rendered them very vulnerable to interception by Air, Sea, or Undersea, means. In the ocean, as in the air, Speed is Life. You don't want a slow cruiser, battleship, or carrier. That's one reason they moved away from float planes--you have to stop to pick them up. When you do . . . SHARKNADO!

And 18" Guns were mounted on UK ships as early as 1918 with the Furious class. 20" were not so big a leap with 20 years to examine the parameters. Aircraft stopped the development of superguns. They were so much faster to reach target, could drop a lot more ordnance a lot more accurately.
