Germany had a better 3.7cm AA gun, the 3..7cm FlaK36/L65 (for the army). In fact, the otherwise unloved 5cm FlaK41/L65 would've been close to perfect for the job; its drawbacks made nugatory by the environment and motion of the ship. Moreover, the 4cm Bofors gun was already in licensed production for the KM by 1940.

Nitrite and nitrate are different. Saltpeter is Potassium Nitrate. The curing/preservative salt is Potassium Nitrite. An easy mistake causing centuries of misunderstanding.
