Four Kongos and four Battleships. The Kongos were heavily used, living active careers. The four old battleships were not so fortunate, suffering little more than ignominy. We might agree that what the IJN really lacked was the 2 pounder pompom/Bofors gun, but, d'you think she would've done better with 8 Kongos, instead of the 4+4 reality? They were underarmored, suffering all of Jutland's hindsight flaws, but were great battlecruisers, imo. As carrier escorts they exceeded all other IJN offerings.
Off topic, imagine, if you will, the Death ride of the Graf Spee revised, with Wichita and two Brooklyn class cruisers* trying to bring Kongo to bay. Only nine 8" rifles, but THIRTY 6" rifles, against all those sponson guns and the eight monster 14" weapons.
*Or a County class Cruiser and three Arethusas . . .
or Prinz Eugen and two Mogami class versus Lexington in her BattleCruiser iteration.
