On a US ship simply ask to be taken to the man in charge. You'll find yourself in the Chiefs' quarters. I hear the beer's better there.

Barnegat class was designed as a small (2000ton) seaplane tender. One was also trialed for catapult training. Very spacious internally, Barnegat was a good choice as a GP secondary ship-better SoNAR station, quieter, able to mount a lot of guns, Hedgehogs, and/or advanced sensors. Cheaper and slower than current fleet destroyers, she also would've made a dandy convoy escort command ship.

Barnegats were fitted for 4x 5"/38cal rifles in single turrets, but quickly lost their four gun pretense as wartime exigencies demanded close range AA defense. A midwar Barnegat might sport a single 5", two quad Bofors mounts, and a Hedgehog or two. Plus RaDAR, SoNAR, and a Philadelphia Experiment Invisibility Projector. Oops! Delete that last. Darn Wikipedia! ;-)

I prefer Uber Oberunterscharfuhrer for Lt Commander, Oberunterscharfuhrer for Lt, and Unterscharfuhrer for Lt (JG). Almost nobody knows what I'm talking about-neither do I-so I am armored in impenetrable Zwigespräch in the best military/political tradition. Further, full Commander is Kapitan EG (Erzatz Grade), Kapitan is self explanatory, and Admiral is divided into four grades as follows: From lower to higher-Flottenfuhrer, Divisionenfuhrer, Schlachtschiff Sündenbock, Fleigerwaffefuhrer. As for "One King to rule them all . . ." I offer as title for the officer in overall command in naval matters: "Wannazee". All the desk jockeys claim they'd sell their souls for a fleet command. It'd be nice . . . if they could fit through zebra closures.
