He must be credible, the slurs are starting.

Unfortunately the Democrats need the votes of both types in order to win.

@allgoo1964 You're not contradicting my point, you're illustrating it. Hillary lost because too many Dem voters went green or stayed home. trump didn't do any much better than Romney or McCain in terms of vote totals but Hillary didn't turn out the voters who elected Obama in 2008 and 2012. As for Bernie holding a "double digit" lead over trump, none of those polls could factor in something that didn't happen, to wit, the Republican propaganda machine turning on him, full bore. By the time the general rolled around, folks would have thought he was Joe Stalin. They might have even found an old CPUSA card for him. It's not like the Ruskies couldn't get their hands on blank ones.

@allgoo1964 Yes, there is. And the last time we tried electing a president without them, his name was George McGovern and it did not go well. I also expect we'll have a lot more if trump continues to alienates large swaths of soon-to-be-former Republicans. I'm not saying that the Democratic Party's only options are to be purist losers or mere Republicans with scruples. I'm arguing for a sort of internal triangulation in which policies are developed which both improve upon and synthesize these two alternatives and, by that process, developing an electoral powerhouse which could govern for a generation.

@allgoo1964 Just because we didn't call it that then, doesn't mean that the distinction didn't exist. Nothing is really new. Even trump, as bizarre and "unpresidented" as he might seem, has his antecedents in Perot and Wallace (George). Read about Huey Long or (Henry) Wallace to see how far back al this goes. Or pick up "The Fourth Turning" by Strauss and Howe.

@allgoo1964 To paraphrase Mitt Romney: Unions ARE corporations, my friend. While union leadership can always be counted on to make progressive noises, they can be equally counted on to endorse what you would call the more corporate Democratic candidate. The bigger the union, the more true this is. But my main point is that there has always been a schism in the party between those who want to go full steam ahead and those wishing to take a more measured approach and that success, for the party, can only come by keeping both groups fully in the tent and participating.
